Normally The Royal Variety Performance is presented at The London Palladium. However, 1982 was one of those years when it was staged at the second choice venue, of Theatre Royal Drury Lane, because the show that was then on at The Palladium had a set in it that could not be easily taken down for the purposes of putting on this show.

As well as those billed just as The Pirates Of Penzance cast, George Cole, Tim Curry, Bonnie Langford, Chris Langham, Sylvester McCoy, Michael Praed and Pamela Stephenson were also members of The Pirates of Penzance cast, and were in The Pirates Of Penzance (Gala Performance), The Pirates Of Penzance (Gala Preview), and, The Pirates Of Penzance (Benefit Preview).

Meanwhile, Rhys Nelson, Chris Power, and Windy City cast members Maurice Lane and Neil McCaul and had appeared in the film version of The Pirates Of Penzance.

It is perhaps worth noting that Theatre Royal Drury Lane has witnessed many historical occurrences, in particular connected with royalty, including assassination attempts on two of the King George�s.

Louise Gold had infamously appeared on a Royal Variety five years previously at The London Palladium in The Royal Variety Performance (1977).

Neil McCaul and Clive Panto went on to appear in Billy The Kid And The Green Baize Vampire.
