Teaming up again with his Cowboy Outfit, Nick Lowe's The Rose of England remains a highly engaging and often overlooked album. The title track tells a World War I-era tale that was sturdy enough to be covered by Brit-folkies The Oyster Band, and features a trademark Lowe hook. Nick took a huge swing at the charts, recording his version (previously recorded by Dave Edmunds, and played live by Rockpile) of his classic "I Knew the Bride" with pal Huey Lewis producing and his band the News providing the track. Fame and fortune may not have followed, but a solid batch of songs including covers of pals John Hiatt ("She Don't Love Nobody") and Elvis Costello ("Indoor Fireworks") rubbed shoulders with Nick's originals as well as Nick's most-covered cover (Moon Mullican's "7 Nights to Rock").

Great Disc - Overlooked

So the "Rose of England" isn't Rockpile? So what? This is a really terrific album. It features mostly songs by Nick but also John Hiatt's "She Don't Love Nobody" as well. I like the song he does with Huey Lewis and the News "I Love The Bride (When She Used To Rock and Roll". But beware if you're an HLN fan, because the rest of the album doesn't sound like that song. My favorite track is the title cut "The Rose of England". The Cowboy Oufit is a great group, with and without Huey Lewis and the News. I can't imagine why it's not out on CD anymore.

It is a happy day -- my pre-ordered 2017 reprint copy of The Rose of England finally arrived! I played the crap out of my cassette (yes, a cassette) back in the day, and it finally got to the point where the sound reflected it. I tried transferring it to CD, but all the wear and tear came right along with it. Now I have a brand new, remastered, digital copy of Nick Lowe's fun-bomb back in my music arsenal. The fact that it was out of print for so long is a crime. If you can somehow keep from singing, toe tapping, or head nodding along with I Knew The Bride, Seven Nights to Rock will surely get you. There's plenty more to be had here: Rose of England, Lucky Dog, and Darlin' Angel Eyes also went immediately into my party shuffle. And I don't care what other reviewers seem to think; I absolutely LOVE the bluesy weirdness of Bobo-Skediddle! I don't know if it's country-flavored rock or rock-flavored country - it came up as "alternative" when I loaded it into iTunes - but I know TRoE is always going to be among my all-time favorites. I'm listening to it right now.

"I Knew the Bride" may have been the single, but it's far from the best song on this album. Like many other albums, if you separate the filler from the meat, there's a wonderful album hidden in here--or at least half an album. The one song that I think is the best on the album (and one of the best of Nick's career) seems to be overlooked by everyone else here, and even by Nick himself since they sequenced it 11th--"Everyone". Martin Belmont's guitar work is exquisite, the song is utterly gorgeous and recalls Everly Brothers and other influences Nick had. I'd buy that song and "The Rose of England" if I couldn't get the rest of the album.

So so so happy to have this on CD. My lord this a great album and ranks up there with his first two albums for quality and consistency. It's not in the same vein as Jesus of Cool and Labour of Lust but it's not that far off. Sharp, smart and unmistakably Nick Lowe with a nod to classic Sun Records rock/rockabilly. The Rose of England is a gorgeous song as good as anything he has written. With the exception of Long Walk Back and Bo Bo Skediddle this album is pretty much brilliant. First class musicianship, clean production that is both spare and warm, nice mix of tempos, the wit and fractured wisdom of Nick Lowe shines through.
