Review
Margaret Atwood's new novel is a fairy tale of malicious simplicity. Fay Weldon's SHE-DEVIL meets John Updike's WITCHES OF EASTWICK...Vividly written, acutely observed and very likely the most intelligently tongue in cheek novel of the year. ― Salman Rushdie, INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY
Excitements, wit and insight sizzle across the pages. Atwood's survey of impulses that bedevil life seethes with imagination, inventiveness and intelligence. Even she has never written better than in this novel of glittering breadth and dark, eerie depths. ― SUNDAY TIMES
The virtuosity with which Margaret Atwood's prose moves between rage and wit, poignancy and suspense, fantasy and realism makesTHE ROBBER BRIDE a stimulating read. THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH

This is the second time reading 'The Robber Bride' and I enjoyed it more than I did the first time I read it (but I think I gave it the same rating).
What can I say about Zenia? Love her or hate her, she makes an impression, how she manages to become part of Tony, Charis & Roz's lives is nothing short of remarkable, she sees their weakness, use it against them then destroyed their lives by having affairs with the three women's significant others, as Zenia admits herself, she shown them how weak willed their men are, whilst using the women's fears against them.
As always Margaret Atwood writes vivid characters, characters who are easy to relate to which makes for more interesting reading. Tony, Charis and Roz are strong women and you learn about them from their backgrounds and they learn more by their experience with Zenia.
Zenia is a enigma, you never find out where she is from, is her name really Zenia? She tells so many stories, it's difficult to believe what is true. Zenia also makes Tony, Charis and Roz sees themselves for who they are, they all have the best of intentions helping Zenia, at the same time, they are human, they feel pleased that they have helped her, it doesn't make them bad people, its just that Zenia uses it as a weakness against them.
A memorable story which I will read again.
We watch all four women age though one – the Robber Bride? -remains aloof and unfathomable.
We skip through certain sections of each of their lives and gain some understanding of all but one of them.
I enjoyed the journey though I found it a little long.
Some aspects of the book I found enjoyable. We have the wonderful expressive writing that you expect from Margaret Atwood. I also found the sections where we learn the back stories of the 3 friends really engaging. Sadly the actual story is not that great and way too far-fetched. Basically Zenia is a kind of Janine Butcher type of character, however EastEnders storylines are more believable and much more fun than this and that's really saying something.
Her spot on descriptions of time , place & character are 'on the money'. The intriuging, Zenia, whom the is the 'Robber Bride, seen through the eyes of those who have been 'robbed' literalky & metaphorically, takes us through their individual experiences of this Jezebel figure. A true Masterclass of story telling, that only Margaret Attwood could think off & 'pull off'. Stunning.
I don't feel its Attwoods best story but it is as with all her books I have read so far engrossing .

While reading this book, there were days when I woke up in the morning thinking about Zenia - why she does this? What can be the reason? Is she finally telling the truth? What will she do next?
Zenia is terrible woman and you would hate her for whatever she does. But, at the same time, she has this magnetic force that just draws you to her. I as a reader found her irresistable so I can totally understand what the characters felt. The more you find about her in the book, the more you hate her but there remains a part inside you that wants to trust her. It is just something about her that maintains a hold on you and on the characters in this book.
Zenia is a villain and one is supposed to hate her but I liked this character - you can like villains...right? You can have a favourite villain of all the ones you have ever read about. Well, Zenia is now one my favourite literay villains!
When I started this book, I felt it was too descriptive and a bit slow. But as I got accustomed to Atwood's writing style and when the story began to unfold... I just flew through it. All in all, a great fantastic read and I am definitely picking up more books from this author. On a final note, I hope no one ever has a Zenia in her life.
