Jill Ker-Conway grew up in the Australian hinterland of New South Wales in the 1930s. She honed her knowledge under the rule of her mother Eve, with whom she had a sore relationship that deteriorated after the death of Jill's father. . Though she becomes rich through several good investments, Eve becomes a bitter alcoholic who forces Jill to venture out into the world and stand on her own two feet. Thrown into the Australian intellectual renaissance of the 1940s, Jill's feminist values are challenged when she falls in love with the rough-and-tumble American mining engineer Alec.
