The talent from actors to directors is undeniable but this movie lacks of a true purpose. Sounds like the message is rather simple and you don’t need some intricate plot to have an interesting movie but something was missing for me. I did not feel anything except the sheer violence. And maybe that’s the point.

It's a get DiCaprio an Oscar movie. Just painful to watch. A lot of close up shots of DiCaprio to make sure the audience sees how hard he's acting. Scenery is first rate but can't make up for all the time you have to see human suffering and cruelty with only brief repites of humanity. I'll take Richard Harris in Man in the Wilderness any day.

I recall loving this movie when I saw it in the theater, however, in watching it again recently I realized how so-so it actually is. I love pieces of this movie, but as a whole, I can't say it's anything all that great. Visually it's stunning and I think it really captures many of the brutal elements of living in that time period. I almost physically feel the pain and suffering of some of the characters as I watch the ongoing agony unfold. However, I think the way in which it deviates from the true story of Mr. Glass is unfortunate. His actual life story would have made a great movie. The real-life end of this movie's tale would have been a bit anticlimactic, but also kind of fascinating at the same time. In actual history, when Glass crawled out of the wilderness, he found that Hardy's real-life character had joined the army, so he couldn't extract his revenge, and I think he was simply given his rifle back and moved on. This could have been a subtly funny way to end the movie as opposed to the violence-fest we're subjected to during the final confrontation. Looking back, I can't say I really enjoyed the story of Glass' fictional son. It certainly made for much sadness and emotional heft, but it was almost too much, really. And while Decaprio 's career should certainly bring him an Oscar award I don't feel this is really his best performance. He really should have won for The Departed. Overall, this movie is worth one watch if you're into this time period, can stomach the brutality of it, and there are certainly worse movies out there, but this could have been so much more.
