So glad I was able to find this on DVD - the case packaging is very nice - full color cover as well as nice photos inside the case of John Payne as Vint Bonner. The DVDs are nicely packed inside - each disc has its own page. Each disc has full color pictures on it with a listing of the episodes contained on the disc. It doesn't differentiate between season 1 or season 2 but the episodes are in order from season 1 episode 1 onward so it's easy to figure out where S1 ends and S2 begins.

They did a really nice job cleaning up the picture as best you can for an old 50's show. It's nicely done, no issues, decent sound even for a 50's show, overall I really was pleasantly surprised. Anyone that likes this show would defintely like this set. Highly recommended!

I'm only half way through this series and enjoying it more and more. I ordered it because a 1 star reviewer complained that "The Six Shooter" didn't kill anybody! That was an inaccurate account of the show, since Vint Bonner does kill on occasion, but he doesn't really believe in violence and tries to handle situations without it, if possible. Since I had lived in a very violent area for a time, I was more than interested in watching this series, where a man uses his brain rather than violence to solve conflicts, and I find it to be a really great addition to my collection.
There is also quite a bit of humor in some of the episodes. Like the time Vint got "engaged" without knowing about it! Then there was the time he was given the job of collecting for a church organ from a community of "retired" outlaws. He also had his Aunt Emma come to take care of him once when he had gotten himself shot up. Being a restless man, Aunt Emma's plans for his future didn't quite sit too well with him; nor did the time he had a town mayor hire him to get rid of a women's Suffragette!
Unless you prefer to see endless bloodshed and violence, you likely will enjoy this difference kind of gunfighter, and adding the series to your collection will likely be an enjoyable purchase.

I like John Payne, so I knew I would like his TV Westerns from the late 1950s. But I didn't realize just how much I would like them. These are some of the best written, best acted TV westerns ever made. They include actors who would go on later to have their own TV westerns; plus many who would go on to have important movie careers. John Payne is the Executive Producer, so he had a hand in a lot of the decision-making. For a guy who started his film career singing in musicals, he turns out to be one of the grittiest, manliest cowboys who rode the West. He's known as The Six-shooter. Wait until you see his gun when he really gets serious. The only down side to this series is that the picture quality is not up to modern day standards, and it is black-and-white. But if you don't mind that, you'll love this series.

I was only a baby when this series was on the air so I don't remember it.
In my adult years, I've become a big fan of John Payne and I enjoy almost all of the films he's been in (one by one, they are slowly being released on DVD - although "Sun Valley Serenade" is still only available on VHS).

I had purchased 2 of the other Restless Gun boxed sets a few years ago but I was disappointed that they only contained a small portion of the series.
Well, I spent the money all over again to get the complete series and I can say that I'm only disappointed that this wasn't released first! I guess Timeless Video had to see if there was a market for it first prior to releasing the entire series.

It's kind of fun watching the episodes back to back. The same actors appear in different roles (something you wouldn't notice if you watched on a weekly basis) and the same scenery is used for a variety of towns and trails. I guess those same actors were under contract to Universal at the time so they just used them multiple times. Many of them went on to be famous later on: Michael Landon, James Coburn, Jack Elam, Dan Blocker. Some of them were co-workers from John Payne's days at Fox like James Gleason.

I've been a fan through his musicals and westerns. Then I read about THE RESTLESS GUN. Being a western fan most of my life, I was surprised to find this series. For the most part the stories were well written and acted. They could be called 'morality plays' but not overdoing the preachy aspects. The quality was rather good, though you could see some scenes were either lighter, darker or grainier than most. You could tell many of the sites were recycled, which probably helped to keep production cost down. I also liked they weren't stuck doing straight dramas. A number of episodes were comedic, so Vint Bonner could bring out his sense of humor. Many actors were brought back in different roles: Claude Akins, Dan Blocker, James Coburn, Robert Blake, Edgar Buchanan, Don Grady, Dabbs Greer and Ellen Corby. Others making single guest appearance were: Michael Landon, Ray Teal, Robert Fuller, Bea Benaderet, Johnny Crawford, Paul Fix and Irene Ryan. John even got the chance to belt out a tune every now and then. Whether you're a fan through his musicals, western or dramatic roles, this series shouldn't disappoint.

I was a, "latchkey," ghetto kid in New York City, during the 1950's. With both parents working and dad away a lot Vint Bonner (John Payne's character, known by another name in the pilot) was my surrogate dad, after school. There were many valuable lessons I got from the series and a good sense of the value of honor that I still feel with pride in myself. I had bought one of the small compilations, but finally found that I wanted them all. I took the other to my therapist who wanted to know from where I got my values, since my parents were so often absent. He got a kick out of seeing these and acknowledged how I had clearly learned much from Vint. Too bad there are no Vint Bonners to babysit our kids anymore. I was raised in the ghetto and, proudly, never brought my parents a moment's grief. They told me so....except for my turning out to be an artist. They wanted me to be a rich lawyer. Oh, well, I still have my values. Hahahaha!
