Thousands of years ago, there was a series of bizarre occurrences that many believe to have been the Ten Biblical Plagues. No one thought they could happen again. Until now.

Katherine Morrissey, a former Christian missionary, lost her faith after the tragic deaths of her family. Now she applies her expertise to debunking religious phenomena. When a series of biblical plagues overrun a small town, Katherine arrives to prove that a supernatural force is not behind the occurrences, but soon finds that science cannot explain what is happening. Instead, she must regain her faith to combat the evil that waits in a Louisiana swamp.

The Reaping is a bible-centric thriller that used The Ten Plaques as the main scare tactic. The visuals effects are decent and the overall tone is consistent, while the stunning Hillary Swank is impressive in the lead role as a non-believer. The Reaping also boasts good portrayals from Idris Elba and young AnnaSophia Robb.
However, the lack of solid thrills and the shallow, predictable plot made this supernatural movie almost god forsaken. The storytelling consistently sagged too and the viewing experience is overall hellish. Faith based thrillers is always a gamble especially when producers hold back to not offend the faithful, but The Reaping could benefit from a little more edge and risks.

Jeez, the suspense is killing me.
What's that?
God exists?
Right. Gathered as much as you were ticking off the plagues.
In order.
And added an eleventh one: "Then the Lord said to Mozes:‘And finally thine eyes shalt explode from watching this horrific piece of crap‘"
And in what universe, faith or religion is this film scary?

p.s. Fire the guy who managed to make Idris Elba boring.

Satan is real. He made this movie to bore the fuck out of us all.
In fact, I feel like I did indeed die of boredom and a hoard of locusts flew up my butt. They flapped their wings to hold my head up, Weekend at Bernies style, while occassionally making me fart. Essentially, Satan turned me into a big fat locust puppet to force me to watch his abortion of a movie.
So, I have seen the true face of hell. It's nature is boredom and it's name is The Reaping.
Speaking of faces, Hilary Swank is a lot better looking than I ever remembered her to be. Sure, her features are a little sharp around the jaw, but she is attractive when she smiles.
Whatever, this is a shit movie.

I’m not usually down for any type of religious/biblical/Christian story, but I like this one more than I should because of Hillary Swank. I really love her and I love that she won an Academy award and then followed it up with a horror movie. Even if it wasn’t intentional, I still love her for it.
I also think Stephen Hopkins deserves more credit than he gets for his movies. This one is actually pretty good until the ending where it just all falls apart completely. Like, things that need to happen just happen with no cause because it’s the direction the story needs to go. Still, I’m totes down for seeing a bunch of Bible Belt holy rollers get all smited by the wrath of god and whatnot. Good clean popcorn fun.

Who would have thought a movie about a series of biblical plagues could be so boring? It never knows if it wants to be a mysterious drama, supernatural thriller or just a plain horror. Not to mention, it can’t even decide whether using CGI cows or puppet cows would be a better option - so it just switches between using both, lol. Maybe just use a real cow next time?

I tried to think about why I just couldn’t get into this other than a story I have zero interest in, uninspired performances by a cast I’d usually be over the moon about, and a whole lotta CGI things flying in the air. Nothing really worked for me :/ Then it dawned on me, I knew why... “From The Director of Lost in Space and A Nightmare on Elm Steet 5: The Dream Child”… two movies I fucking hate so much.

I’ll give Stephen Hopkins credit tho, I LEGIT LOVE Predator 2... plus The Ghost in the Darkness, Blown Away, and Judgment Night aren’t shabby either.
It’s really hard for me to get into a lot of biblical horror stuff unless it’s rampaging possessed nuns stabbing & fucking each other while killing raped religious men and going full black metal Carrie à la Alucarda... that I can deal with but Hilary Swank and cgi plagues do not cut it. Avoid.

surpreendentemente foi uma grata surpresa, não é o melhor filme do mundo e tá bem longe de ser, já que diversos pontos me fizeram achar o filme chato. inclusive colocaram tantas tramas aqui que em diversos momentos parecia que eu estava vendo outro filme. mas não nego que de fato a trama principal prendeu a minha atenção e eu gostei de acompanhar, principalmente por causa das pragas bíblicas. enfim, o plot final me pegou.

Hilary Swank is always worth the price of admission and this was a worthwhile watch for me namely because of her and the religious horror she finds herself in. Throw in some eerie uses of Biblical motifs, irresistible N'awlins vibes, decent pacing, a lackluster finale, and Idris Elba yet again losing the battle against a passable Yankee accent and you get 'THE REAPING'. You'll wish it was better while being thankful it isn't worse. Glad to finally check this southern fried flick off my long-timer list.

Although its script could use some more punching-up, director Stephen Hopkins' work behind the camera and the efforts of a solid cast manage to elevate The Reaping above the material, the end result making for a surprisingly fine thriller with an intriguing plot, good atmosphere, and impressive effects.

The storyline follows a woman who investigates paranormal experiences and always believes there is a scientific reason they happen. When a town's river turns to blood, the woman and her teams head in to investigate. With each passing day another unique phenomenon happens that may cause her to change her mind....
This movie is directed by Stephen Hopkins (Predator 2) and stars Hillary Swank (Million Dollar Baby), Idris Elba (The Harder they Fall), David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer) and Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta).

The first two acts are surprisingly really intriguing. The backwoods town in the Louisiana swamps was an interesting setting, the establishing mystery was engrossing, the incorporation of the "biblical plagues" is something foreign to me so it was immediately alluring... I questioned why the ratings for this film were so low.
Then, the third act arrived. Girl, what. It heavily nosedived into a convoluted and silly mess. I can appreciate what the attempt was but it was insanely rushed. The CGI and visual effects for the particular fiery hellscape were wonky too. I was also reminded how, in the 2000's, CGI animals were atrocious.
A real shame. This had all of the ingredients to be great but unfortunately, the execution flopped. Also, there's a plot-hole with Stephen Rea's character that cannot be overlooked. 5/10.

Pretty freaky battle between good and evil and the 10 biblical plagues. Hillary Swank has the starring role as she investigates the strange going ons in deep Louisiana. Nice support from Idris Elba and The Governor David Morressey. I liked the twist at the end of the movie....if you like horror movies then I can recommend this one to you.
