The astounding yet true rags-to-riches saga of a homeless father who raised and cared for his son on the mean streets of San Francisco and went on to become a crown prince of Wall Street

At the age of twenty, Milwaukee native Chris Gardner, just out of the Navy, arrived in San Francisco to pursue a promising career in medicine. Considered a prodigy in scientific research, he surprised everyone and himself by setting his sights on the competitive world of high finance. Yet no sooner had he landed an entry-level position at a prestigious firm than Gardner found himself caught in a web of incredibly challenging circumstances that left him as part of the city's working homeless and with a toddler son. Motivated by the promise he made to himself as a fatherless child to never abandon his own children, the two spent almost a year moving among shelters, "HO-tels," soup lines, and even sleeping in the public restroom of a subway station.

Never giving in to despair, Gardner made an astonishing transformation from being part of the city's invisible poor to being a powerful player in its financial district.

More than a memoir of Gardner's financial success, this is the story of a man who breaks his own family's cycle of men abandoning their children. Mythic, triumphant, and unstintingly honest, The Pursuit of Happyness conjures heroes like Horatio Alger and Antwone Fisher, and appeals to the very essence of the American Dream.

An amazing inspirational story. If you’re like me and found this book after seeing the movie do not hesitate to buy this book! The movie, while it is one of my all time favorites, does not hold a candle to the inspiration that I gained from this book! 10/10 recommend.I was even lucky enough to get a signed copy!

I really enjoyed this book, minus the GD part! You felt like you were following along with Chris, as he struggled in his life. In reading this book, what all he went through, played out in my minds eye. I could see it all.

I was really hoping he'd mention if he ever did get a Ferrari and finally, towards the end of the book, he did say he got a red one, and then a black one.

I was so happy for him, once he started sharing how he was finally succeeding and then doing very well, financially. He certainly deserved it!

I saw the movie, years ago, which was wonderful. Will Smith and his son, did a great job portraying Chris and his son. This book was fantastic and I would highly recommend it.

A good read, some profanity which am not a fan of but read this pretty much over one weekend. I bought this because I enjoyed the film, the book is nothing like the film.in fact till about page 186 there are no similarities other than the name of the main character.

So many emotions for this book. Still loved though

I hear Will Smith is in the lead role in the movie based on this book. It is truly an incredible story of one man's rise from homelessness to being a millionaire! Not only that but he is forced to show up for his first important job interview on Wall Street in paint-spattered shoes, having been evicted - and he still manages to talk himself into the job!

This is one of those stories that is so incredible, so "making it against all odds". The author has a strong, passionate voice and he doesn't flinch from telling the truth, including the fact that when he lived in hotels with his young son, they played a game called, "Shhh..." which involved keeping quiet when people knocked on the door or tried to find out if they were there (to evict them). But he didn't let the trauma, the hard times, defeat him. He simply faced up to the fact that he'd have to dig himself out of a hole, hard as it was....and, miraculously, he did.

If you're feeling down, this book ought to inspire you!

I am a reader of many nonfiction books and recommend this book to all who read and want to understand
the life and trials of a black man from early childhood to coming of age to becoming a very wealthy and prosperous adult. It gives one, such as a white 70 year old women, a new perspective on the life of black people and the loss of hope in this country. We are still living in the dark ages in the U.S. and I think everyone should enlighten themselves by reading this book. Thank you Chris Gardner for offerring up
yourself so others might learn!

I love Chris Gardner's "up by your bootstraps/ overcoming adversity" story. It is real and raw and brutally honest. For adults, it's great but you will have trouble finding the movie in this book. That doesn't mean it isn't worth the read. It can't be used as a family read aloud because it contains too much foul language and sexual overtones for a family book. You would have to skip a lot of material. We did as a couple who does extensive driving and reads aloud to each other.

The first 150 pages are almost a total waste of time. In a third of that, the same could be said without detriment to the big picture. It all makes it look like his success it’s quasi irrelevant to the story. Go read other books or find a better-written story

5.0 out of 5 stars The real man behind the movie
Reviewed in Canada on July 18, 2015
We all saw the Will Smith's movie, but the book get a lot of facts straight. Gardner is not the angelical, perfect man Smith portrays, but a regular dude with huge flaws and a lot of resilience and ambition. Very humbling to read his story and to get to know who that guy really was. I wanted to kick his ass in some parts but then give him a huge hug in the next.
