The astounding yet true rags-to-riches saga of a homeless father who raised and cared for his son on the mean streets of San Francisco and went on to become a crown prince of Wall Street
At the age of twenty, Milwaukee native Chris Gardner, just out of the Navy, arrived in San Francisco to pursue a promising career in medicine. Considered a prodigy in scientific research, he surprised everyone and himself by setting his sights on the competitive world of high finance. Yet no sooner had he landed an entry-level position at a prestigious firm than Gardner found himself caught in a web of incredibly challenging circumstances that left him as part of the city's working homeless and with a toddler son. Motivated by the promise he made to himself as a fatherless child to never abandon his own children, the two spent almost a year moving among shelters, "HO-tels," soup lines, and even sleeping in the public restroom of a subway station.
Never giving in to despair, Gardner made an astonishing transformation from being part of the city's invisible poor to being a powerful player in its financial district.
More than a memoir of Gardner's financial success, this is the story of a man who breaks his own family's cycle of men abandoning their children. Mythic, triumphant, and unstintingly honest, The Pursuit of Happyness conjures heroes like Horatio Alger and Antwone Fisher, and appeals to the very essence of the American Dream.

About the authors
Raised in the iconoclastic East Tennessee town of Oak Ridge (AKA The Secret City), a merger of nuclear physicists, artsy bohemians and hillbillies. Went to Sarah Lawrence College to pursue an acting career and studied writing with E.L. Doctorow. Came to the West Coast and got a job in the shoe business, a misspelling because I actually wanted to be in show business. Have worked as an actress and VoiceOver artist. Have written fiction and am working on a screen adaptation of my 2005 bestselling BEAUTIFUL JIM KEY: The Lost History of a Horse and a Man Who Changed the World. As a co-author and ghostwriter, I've collaborated on well over three dozen works of nonfiction including national bestsellers and critically acclaimed books such as THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS with Chris Gardner (with a story made into a feature film starring Will Smith), FINDING FISH with Antwone Fisher (also a feature film) and BECOMING DR. Q with Alfredo Quinones Hinojosa (also in development as a feature film). Collaboration on deck for 2021 includes the release of the audio book for BEAUTIFUL JIM KEY (as read by author) books are PERMISSION TO DREAM with Chris Gardner *April 21*, FLAMIN' HOT CHEETOS with Richard Montanez June 2021, GO WHERE THERE IS NO PATH with Christopher Gray August 2021 . and PIGLET: The Unexpected Story of a Deaf Blind Pink Puppy and His Family (August 2021).

I was really hoping he'd mention if he ever did get a Ferrari and finally, towards the end of the book, he did say he got a red one, and then a black one.
I was so happy for him, once he started sharing how he was finally succeeding and then doing very well, financially. He certainly deserved it!
I saw the movie, years ago, which was wonderful. Will Smith and his son, did a great job portraying Chris and his son. This book was fantastic and I would highly recommend it.

This is one of those stories that is so incredible, so "making it against all odds". The author has a strong, passionate voice and he doesn't flinch from telling the truth, including the fact that when he lived in hotels with his young son, they played a game called, "Shhh..." which involved keeping quiet when people knocked on the door or tried to find out if they were there (to evict them). But he didn't let the trauma, the hard times, defeat him. He simply faced up to the fact that he'd have to dig himself out of a hole, hard as it was....and, miraculously, he did.
If you're feeling down, this book ought to inspire you!
the life and trials of a black man from early childhood to coming of age to becoming a very wealthy and prosperous adult. It gives one, such as a white 70 year old women, a new perspective on the life of black people and the loss of hope in this country. We are still living in the dark ages in the U.S. and I think everyone should enlighten themselves by reading this book. Thank you Chris Gardner for offerring up
yourself so others might learn!
