The Possession 2012

The Possession

Critics Consensus

It may be based on a true story, but that doesn't excuse the way The Possession repeatedly falls back on hoary ghost movie clichés -- or the uninentional laughs it provides.

Movie Info

When their youngest daughter, Em (Natasha Calis), becomes strangely obsessed with an antique wooden box bought from a yard sale, parents Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm. However, Em becomes increasingly unstable, leading the couple to fear the presence of a malevolent force. To their horror, Clyde and Stephanie learn that the box contains a dybbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits -- and ultimately devours -- a human host.

Does it's thing pretty fine, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is perfectly capable, but God I am so over this exact formula cropping up in the genre over and over and over. The Possession doesn't have a single thing that makes it noteworthy.

A sturdy reprisal of an all too familiar premise and subtle, above-par performances are both pulverised into a pulp of annoying special effects and a boring and depressing tone. The film starts good and wobbles slightly towards a satisfactory conclusion.

An ok well made film, but again I have an issue with these 12A rated "horror" films, really need to be cranked up a little to be scary which would mean at least a 15 or 18 rating. It's just not that scary or jumpy, it has a good cast but it's too similar to many others of the genre. It could have been a lot better.
