      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Outsider may satisfy Western fans, but despite a winning performance from Country music legend Trace Adkins it's too predictable to really leave a mark.

kevin c Country music star Trace Adkins plays a crooked lawman in this western, which really feels like the only genuine thing in this movie.  It's not a terrible movie as the plot isn't bad, it's just not that well executed. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review georgan g Don't waste your time on this one!!! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I know I'm in the minority on this, but I thought this show was bad. I was totally into this show until the very end. That final act was so awful (in so many ways!!) that it ruined the show entirely for me. The first thing I noticed was the really bad sound editing. I don't normally notice this sort of thing, but I think it's one of those things that you're not suppose to notice and if you do, no bueno. Anyone? That was my only issue with the show or the story for the first 80%. But it took such a massive nosedive at the end there, and then I just started noticing other production-y stuff. The editing, the sound, the writing, the special effects, and the music!!! Holy shit the music was so goddamn unnecessary! and so cheeesy!!! The props! The cave! Those giant plastic stalagmites!! It all seemed so low budge! The writing at the end was cringeworthy. I have never experienced this before. Never in my life have I watched a show go totally down the toilet so dramatically. It's almost like a different crew of writers and staff came in at the end. I have such good things to say about the first 80% of the season (really!) But those last two episodes were shit. The acting was wonderful though. Great performances by all. Jason Bateman: excellent. The writing was terrible at the end. Jesus I'm not gonna sleep tonight. Oof. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Weak script, stereotyped characters and acting, one cliche after another, and all shot at night or in the rain so miss the low budget production. Avoid any movie from Cinedigm, they are full of violence and cynicism. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/02/20 Full Review Audience Member Maybe the worst western I've ever seen. Its an amalgam of cliches from other westerns thrown together in a jumbled pile and shot at night so you can't see anything. Skip this one. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I think this movie is a great depictiction of what it means to have nothing to lose and the evolution of gaining a family and willing to die for that family. Jared Leto did an amazing job of portraying an outsider who was welcomed into a family and proved his loyalty. He avenged his father and ultimately gained the respect of not only his brothers but an opposing clan. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Joe Leydon Variety Trace Adkins looms large in a dark and brooding sagebrush saga with a healthy dose of Spaghetti Western fatalism. Jun 14, 2019 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ... scores points as a well-mounted, traditional Western that should please anyone looking for a fix of old-school moral justice... Rated: 4/5 Feb 22, 2021 Full Review James Hanton Outtake Mag The story lacks anything new, the filming choices are weird, and the characters fall short. Best advice is to ride out of town before the final shot. Rated: 2 / 5 Jul 27, 2020 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy First, it was that episode of Game of Thrones. Then, it was Godzilla: King of the Monsters. And now, here's the indie Western The Outsider to suggest that maybe it's time for filmmakers to consider buying a light bulb or two to help illuminate their sets. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 26, 2019 Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound Railroad worker, revenge, corrupt lawman, and country star Trace Adkins!?! That package should attract the eyes of fans of Westerns and country music. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 3, 2019 Full Review Jackie K. Cooper jackiekcooper.com A gritty western which holds your attention but never completely draws you into its story of revenge. Rated: 5/10 Jun 17, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
