This has the exact same "very fun, very cheesy" feel as what Wes Montgomery did on his A&M records. Take from that what you will.

I have to admit I wasn't that psyched about hearing this album as I am definitely not a Beatles guy, plus Benson's previous album Tell It Like It Is is one of his worst. This one though is special as Benson picks an all star cast from the fusion scene and turns these songs into funky but complex jams. Orchestra included. Worth it just to hear Ron Carter's bass. Favorite: "Because" / "Come Together".

This review refers to the Japanese issue of 2015.

I was inspired to try this having recently (2016) discovered the Booker T tribute to Abbey road, "McLemore Avenue". I'd never known that either existed until now and the idea of a reinterpretation of the Beatles greatest album was too much to resist. Both albums add a whole lot more to the mix than a simple re-hashing of the original and this one is the more abstract of the two. Not surprisingly, given the year of issue and the sort of music that George Benson was making at the time, it is heavy on the Jazz and bears no resemblance to the middle of the road, less interesting material he would migrate to in the mid to late Seventies. One might have expected it to be all guitar but, on the contrary, it is a good mix of instruments. There's no note for note tribute here and the Jazz is very modern whilst still being highly melodic. I always thought that the concept of artists playing another's entire album (all but in this case) was a modern phenomena but clearly that needs a re-think!

Audio Quality:

I had a look around on the internet to try and discover a little more about this issue. There's no mention of year but many websites cite 2015 and all of them state that this is a budget issue. What little information there is on the packaging is all in Japanese but there is certainly no mention of remastering in the English edition notes. So, with little expectation of quality sound, I was surprised to hear a fantastic soundscape, featuring an unambiguously high audiophile quality. The bass is crystal clear and precise and the soundstage is deep and wide. It helps that the album was clearly recorded well and the mix is nigh on perfect. It's a real cracker!

Nice jazz pop by George and his band mates. A very versatile Benson takes on the song material from The Beatles 'Abbey Road'. His musical range goes from soulful vocal performances ('Golden Slumbers', 'Oh! Darling'), to nice jazz guitar works ('Come Together') and expanded jams ('I Want You (She's So Heavy)').

I mean, yeah, it's cool and impressive and all, but is it really that good?

I realize that my reviews are quite personal, but tonight I have this Benson Feeling, which means I find the album nice enough.

This is a great cover album from George Benson. He picked my favorites from the original and reinterpreted them in a very smooth and jazzy manner. I only wish "Octopus' Garden" was more "recognizable" but other than that this effort is solid throughout. Benson has a great voice too and having Herbie Hancock on the keys and Ray Barretto on percussion never hurt anyone. 4/5
