It's not even funny how much better Fidelity support is than "the other guys"

Feedback

Where do I start?

  • Never waited more than 30 seconds on hold on the phone or on chat

  • Never had an agent read or copy+paste from a script in response to my questions

  • Never got the feeling an agent was being anything but candid with me

  • Active community on Reddit where the mods actually add value

  • User feedback is heard, acted on, and referenced in release notes

  • Transferred my whole financial life into Fidelity and got a call from them to thank me for my business

Other key selling points for Fidelity over the competition:

  • Auto-buy feature for ETFs (edit: and stocks!), not just mutual funds

  • Fidelity supports crypto -- a major plus for this degen

  • Really solid cash management product

  • Auto-roll on fixed income securities

  • Way better active trading tools than their peers

  • FullView is a surprisingly viable alternative to Mint (RIP)

What would take Fidelity from 10 to 11? In my opinion:

  • Support weekly automated transfers from Cash Management Accounts to Brokerage the same way you do with transfers from external accounts (the workaround does the job but is cumbersome)

  • Support using your CMA account as a funding source for trades in your brokerage account (just as you do with external bank accounts)

  • Ability to create goals and assign one or more individual holdings to them. For example I have a stack of FIHFX that I'm using to save for a house down payment in 10 years. Let me create a goal around that holding so that I can budget and track my monthly contributions. I came from Betterment and their goal-based investing model is *the only* thing that is very hard to replicate cleanly with other institutions.

  • Get Plaid to the table and help them see the light: they should adopt your new API security standards. I really want to be able to use Plaid to connect to my Fidelity account from other institutions

  • Support Coinbase and Gemini connections in FullView

  • Support automated cash transfers from CMA or Brokerage into Fidelity Crypto

  • Support automated buys of crypto

  • Support more crypto assets (at least the majority of the top 25)

  • Basket Portfolios but for crypto (assuming you support more assets in the future). Betterment offers a pretty interesting product along these lines.

Fidelity customer service is consistently fantastic.

It keeps me a happy and loyal customer.

u/DukeSilverVol1 avatar

It is great. I called the other day to set up a 529 now that my daughter is born and transfer the funds I had in a 529 from before she was born. The guy was not only very helpful, but you could tell he enjoyed doing what he was doing. People act like it’s just a job, and to many I’m sure it is, but he went above and beyond. It was great, and I filled out a survey to make sure they knew.

u/TerminalFront avatar

Dude, Fidelity customer support has been an absolute pleasure. I hope that never changes

After *many* years with Vanguard, I left a couple years ago. Their customer service had dwindled to almost nothing and it was incredibly frustrating. Moved every dime to Fidelity and have been completely happy.

I was with Betterment for about a decade, and as much as I loved their goal-based investing tools (seriously top notch) and their decent crypto investing product, I got fed up with the underperformance of their core portfolio compared to no-fee alternatives.

I rolled everything over to Vanguard and it took me all of a month to have a few sub-par encounters with their customer service. I rolled everything over to Fidelity and the rest is history.

💯…I just wish they would find another CC partner. Elan Financials customer service is not even close to Fidelity.

u/Just_Nice_Things avatar

Elan totally sucks. My Fidelity credit card experience has been the only bad Fidelity experience I've had. Everything else has been flawless - really exceeded my expectations and been very seamless.

For now

The ability to view the total amount of an individual company stock owned for your entire portfolio to include mutual funds outside of Fidelity.

Morningstar has this ability. If Fidelity could do this I could cancel Morningstar.

I've been on the phone with fidelity about 10 times in the last year and I can say their customer support is exceptional.

I switched from Schwab to fidelity and don't regret it.

u/jedi2155 avatar

Fidelity customer service is absolutely fantastic. That being said their Active Trader Pro (ATP) platform while fantastic in features is CONSTANTLY HAVING BUGS AND INCOSISTENT data feeds.

Outages and charts/balances that don't update make me really upset and I've definitely lost money due to said bugs. PLEASE put more resources into resolving ATP stability as that should be king above any additional features.

Fidelity support is fantastic.

Was surprised how easy it was to close out a zeroed out account with just the virtual assistant

I’ve been with Fidelity over 40 years with occasional interactions with other investment firms. The others don’t even come close to the service Fidelity provides. I can credit Fidelity for helping my family get to our financial position. We probably wouldn’t be where we are financially without them. I’ve also had my extended family, friends, coworkers and my firm move to Fidelity. All are very pleased with the service.

This warms my heart to hear, u/Key_Ad_528.

Sounds about right.

When my son was around 18 or so I had him write a check to pay his college tuition. Wanted to "teach him responsibility" or something.

Week later Fidelity calls to ask about the check. After all, his signature was not on file because my son was only 1 yr old when I opened the college savings account. Duh. Not a problem, they had honored the check when presented for payment. Just wanted me to know.

Not every financial institution would have handled it so adeptly.

u/bro-v-wade avatar

Autobuy for stocks too, not just ETFs is mutual funds.

True that. Big feature.

edit: epic user name, bro v. wade

Huh, so I had to google platinum plus. 3% on all purchases would make the card extremely competitive against the likes of Chase Sapphire Reserve (when factoring in the bonus value you get when spending your points thru the Chase portal). Gotta have $2M in eligible assets, though. Looks like I've got some work to do...

To get more than 2%, those assets have to be professionally managed by Fidelity. That means you're going to be giving them an AUM percentage on your total portfolio just to get an additional 1% cash back on your purchases. That seems like a losing proposition.

I'm the personal representative for my recently deceased father's estate. Sadly, an accident took him away from us before he completed a will, meaning that his estate is intestate. Ultimately, it's just a bit of extra paperwork from the courts and NBD in the scheme of things.

I have had to deal with both big and small financial organizations since his passing, as well as an Ameritrade account during their transition to Charles Schwab and Wells Fargo as well as smaller banks.

They've all been a nightmare in one way or another.

I put off Fidelity until the end because I assumed that they would be the worst of them, especially considering that they hold the majority of my Dad's financial assets.

I came on here expecting the usual, and expected to read upcycled copy pasta bs and more shadowy lingo that left me more confused than informed.

Boy, was I wrong. This subreddit is amazing. I really hope that other organizations follow their lead here. The language is accessible and whoever is the handler for the replies here has broken the mold. Replies have some character, but also, not too much character.

I just started working with Fidelity irl over stalking here, and I am probably going to actually keep an account with them moving forward.

Whereas all the other financial organizations have kept moving the goal post for liquidation, which drags out the process for the benefit of the institution, Fidelity has been clear, concise, polite, timely and unambiguous. I am prepared during our meetings as I have been able to answer most of my questions ahead of time, thanks to searching this subreddit.

Thanks for making this post.

I’m sorry for your loss. The way institutions respond in a time of personal crisis is extremely telling. Thanks for sharing the experience.

I had to call customer support for the first time this week actually for an issue with an international stock trade and support person totally understood what I was saying. I was expecting a typical scripted “have you tried [x thing I already tried]“ experience and had none of that. He asked what I was experiencing, understood, politely asked to hold while he investigated, and then later found the issue and told me a fix would be put in and would be reflected in a few hours.

Next day I tried my trade again for that stock and it worked.

That being said I wouldn’t mind some improvements on the mobile app and the web site, but that’s more to do with UX than customer support.

u/FidelityEmilio avatar

Thanks for sharing your experience, u/Squimpleton; and thanks for posting to the sub for the first time!

Their customer service is top notch

u/Chance_Brilliant_138 avatar

I literally had to talk to them last night, because I was freaking out over an order I made and the way the confirmation read was confusing. I called support, I didn't have to wait at all for an agent, and despite being such a late hour, they were very pleasant to talk to and confirmed I didn't mess anything up. Very happy with them.

u/FidelityJenny avatar

Sounds like a win/win, u/Chance_Brilliant_138!

We know how important it is to be there for our clients when in a time of need. I'm glad to hear our phone team was able to jump in to assist and bring that reassurance you needed.

We appreciate the kind words and hope to see you around the sub in the future!

Just had an issue where it felt like a transfer was taking to long. Called and spoke with a rep who said he would keep an eye on it and call me back with updates. Much to my surprised he called me back. Sad how bad customer service is that I never expected a callback.

agreed, their CS is top notch

FullView is a surprisingly viable alternative to Mint (RIP)

i personally use YNAB and love it, but will check this out to maybe supplement or check my work, thanks!

It's particularly useful as a net worth / investment allocation tracker, which YNAB lacks. As a budgeting tool, I don't know that there's a better option than YNAB, although FullView does allow you to track spending by category (if you grant it permission to do so) which might scratch your itch depending on what you use YNAB for.

u/OkSource5749 avatar

After the death of Mint I was just looking for an aggregator which I can export to excel and do my own pivot tables. I don't trust any service not to change now but Fullview has been great for what I need. The rules are better than mint.

Or offer better credit card rewards. 3% cash back card for customers with let’s say 500k in assets and not having to be managed by fidelity wealth management

u/mfollo avatar

I'd love to see this (as Robinhood just did) but it'll be hard without a subscription/management fee. RH has the Gold subscription (5$/month) and a good chunk of their user base gambles a lot with options so the CC APR will bring them extra money. Fidelity is pretty much free for anything and users are more long-term investors from my understanding

u/ZombieWanKenobi avatar

FWIW, something similar has been possible with Bank of America for a while (2.625% cashback, zero fees, 100k asset requirement). It would be fantastic if Fidelity can offer that (and hopefully with a better CC partner than Elan).

u/mfollo avatar

You are not wrong there. I do have the customized cash reward BOFA CC giving 3.5% on grocery and 5.25% on online shopping with Preferred Rewards. I'm going to lose that soon since I moved all my money to Fidelity and it may even make sense to move 100k of my portfolio to Merrill Lynch just to keep the CC bonuses at this point if Fidelity doesn't improve their offer.

I agree. I have my personal account with Fidelity, an account for my company, and accounts for my trusts.

u/alax-w avatar

Outstanding customer service is the main reason I transfer to Fidelity as my hub banking.

Love Fidelity. Hate their lame mobile app.

It’s a bummer. Vanguard’s app is prettier but way less functional. At least Fidelity’s has dark mode!

I want Robinhood-level eye candy!

I’ve had the opposite experience, contacted support 3 times over 3 months about not getting a promo for opening an account and each one lied saying I’d get the promo deposited within a few days after each call, I ended up giving up and closing the account. They were all nice but lost a lot of trust in their ability to actually fulfill their claims.

After, moving my old employer HSA to fidelity, I quickly moved everything from Schwab and Vanguard. Fidelity is top tier imho. They service nearly every account you could want, they don’t charge fees on most of the things I use, and they have a good money market for holding cash. I use Fidelity as my checking account and the customer service people their are always straightforward, helpful and quick. I can’t recall ever being on hold for more than a minute.

u/some_dude_85 avatar

Fidelity doesn't even offer reasonable 2FA options, you think they're avoiding Plaid because of security standards? Nah, I bet it has more to do with the Plaid competitor they started and still partially own.

First of all a bunch of my feedback and suggestions had nothing to do with Fidelity Crypto. And here's the great thing about crypto: if you don't like it, you don't have to invest in it! Imagine that.

If you have that much of a problem with people and institutions that support it, perhaps you should migrate to Vanguard, because they don't sell it and they don't even allow people to buy the crypto ETFs. Nice and safe, right?

It's a good thing that NFS doesn't have any crypto on its balance sheet, then. All of Fidelity's crypto offerings are under Fidelity Digital Asset Services, LLC.

Did you even do any research before forming your opinion, or did you just hear Fidelity utter the word crypto and immediately become upset?
