In The Mummy Returns, the special effects are impressive, but the characters seem secondary to the computer generated imagery.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media Very violent, mostly in comic-book terms. Rated: 4/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Peter Travers Rolling Stone A piss-poor mummy movie indeed that doesn't deliver a damn thing worth preserving. Rated: 1/5 Jun 4, 2001 Full Review Caroline Westbrook Empire Magazine As escapist, noisy popcorn entertainment, it certainly delivers Rated: 3/5 May 18, 2001 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand [Stephen] Sommers is a pure pop Stephen Spielberg but this chapter is less 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' than 'Gunga Din,' a pulp update of old Hollywood action movies. Apr 14, 2023 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The nonstop action sequences are comparable to the original, though the timing and execution here lack the creativity and momentum needed to truly match up. Rated: 4/10 Nov 7, 2020 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed Feels like treading of the same old ground. And that's likely because no one here has really evolved. Catherine R The reason for my rating, for this film, is that there's more adventure, more of Imhotep and Anck-Su-naun's story and more of why they are the way they are. I love how it already showed that Rick and Evy got married and had their son, and how it shows that he inherits his mom's brains and his dad's strength and bravery. Plus, the phrase "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", you definitely get alittle bit of that in this film. It's what makes the story so good. Like yes, their ne t adventure is to get their son back from the devil himself but also see that the son, can indeed, hold his own. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review Madie R The same great cast returns to once again defeat Imhotep. Everything you loved about the first movie is transferred over to this sequel. It's funny, but the best thing about this movie may be the bad CGI job of the Scorpion King that looks like something out of a video game because the jankiness of the effect is "perfect" for the scene. In fact, the tone of The Mummy Returns is like a live-action cartoon. The subpar CGI may not have been intentional, but all it does is underline the cartoon elements of the sequel. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/24 Full Review Sophia D "The Mummy Returns" is a movie trying to copy the success as its predecessor but failing miserably. Sure they brought back the same actors and the director but it didn't have the same feel and magic that the original did. Maybe it's the heavy reliance of CGI without a lot of practical that makes it hard to watch, as we know the CGI of the time isn't the flawless technology that we know it as today. There are a lot of plot holes that just don't make sense. I understand a lot of motivations but there are some story elements added that completely change the context of the original movie and was never mentioned before. I will say the chemistry between Fraser and Weisz is still there and remarkable as ever to watch. But that is one of the only things saving this movie. I think if they took more time in developing the script and characters it would have been a better movie but it was obviously rushed before the rest could be forgotten to use make the studio extra cash. I don't recommend this one unless you are a big fan of the first movie and are just dying to get more of Rick and Eve O'Connell. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Elijah B The mummy franchise should be declared a classic now Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/16/23 Full Review Alec B There are fun elements, but they get drowned out by the overly complicated and stupid plot. Say whatever you want about the first one but at least it was relatively straightforward. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/23 Full Review Spike G It's decent enough to count as a sequel Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
