Erik J I thought the first half was superbly and crisply written, profound, compelling, well-directed and acted. But the second half was too dragged out, overstated and overindulgent. Had the movie been 20 minutes shorter I would have given it five stars. For the record, it gained a half star overnight after I slept on it. It took me a little while to process why the main character initially thought of herself that way, and how she had a revelation. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Shamylla This is one of the best 90s romcoms I've ever seen. It's a wonderful story of what people can be together, and how to face what you really want and come to terms with it. Would love for there to be another half hour of the movie for some happy ever after fluff 🥰 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/23 Full Review bob p Lightweight yet believable love relationship between two Columbia professors who just want a platonic relationship. Fine acting from Barbra Streisand, Jeff Bridges and Lauren Bacall. I watched this 26 years after it was made and it still worked. We need more movies today like this one! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Diane B This popped up and I was reminded of how much I hated this movie. Strong confident beautiful Barbara Streisand plays a schlumpy insecure professor who sighs every time she looks in the mirror, doesn't think she's worthy of Jeff Bridges, highlights her hair and voila. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/07/22 Full Review Audience Member How can two people be so well-suited for each other without sex, advertising, and society telling us to glamour ourselves? Jeff Bridges, Barbra Streisand, Lauren Bacall, Pierce Brosnan, Mimi Rogers, Elle McPherson, and the late George Segal This story is the relationship between a frumpy college lecturer, Rose specializing in romantic literature and a fellow professor, Gregory who wants a platonic friendship with an intelligent woman However, Rose begins to long for more, and they both soon find that their goal of a union based on celibacy will be difficult to achieve They want the attraction but without the obvious stuff of being physically attractive and sexually aroused getting in the way Rose's mother is fairly suspicious of her choices What is marriage?, why do we want love, we want meaning, companionship, if it's myth or manipulative it makes us feel alive wanting the real thing in any shape or form, we are left with treasured memories once love happens, it gives us psychological need for completion, it lasts and doesn't but feels great, love is immensely painful even if at times it isn't everlasting Streisand and Bridges are wonderful together, always butting heads about what the subject of love should be and how others should see them The movie is too long though watching them go back and forth It gets a bit tiresome Some of the music is a bit extreme I felt that they should dial it down a bit It's a loopy contrivance as far as plotting goes Streisand directing shows her competent as a filmmaker and puts a twist on the typical rom-com Although it really could've been stronger in many respects not feeling so familiar Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

David Ansen Newsweek The loopy contrivance of this plot is exacerbated by the broadness with which Streisand directs Richard LaGravenese's script. The slapstick manner collides queasily with the therapeutic tone. Feb 26, 2018 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune [Barbara] Streisand's direction is solid, save for a needless run-on ending over the final credits, and cinematographers Dante Spinotti and Andrzej Bartkowiak make New York City sparkle.
