One of the things director Guy Ritchie loves doing with his movies is putting together a stellar ensemble cast. It's been seen with Snatch, RocknRolla, and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. Not to mention, shows like Netflix's The Gentlemen.
Now, Ritchie follows suit with the spy-comedy, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. This film retells the 1942 British army black ops mission known as Operation Postmaster. The cast is as eclectic, star-studded and engaging as can be.

Henry Cavill plays Gus March-Phillips, the leader of a crew that the British government commissions for a secret job. Gus is brought out of military prison because he has the cavalier attitude and knowledge to stay off the grid. No matter what, this squad cannot be tied to the Crown. Gus March-Phillipps was an actual soldier who led this operation.
Born in 1908, he ran several covert missions, eventually winning the Distinguished Service Order (DOS) and becoming a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). March-Phillips would die in duty in 1942 on another mission. Ritchie does exaggerate things, as he adapts the 2014 book: Churchill's Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII by Damien Lewis.

Rory Kinnear plays Winston Churchill, the former British statesman, soldier, and writer who twice served as Prime Minister. Churchill is sick and tired of the Nazis ravaging Europe, so he wants to strike back as Prime Minister, and free up territory for the Allies to operate from.
Churchill did this in real life. Born in 1874, he was adamant about destroying German ships, so the USA could bring over troops and resources. This forms the crux of Ritchie's plot, as Gus' team is meant to blow up ships that replenished German U-Boats. Like his real-life counterpart, Churchill makes it clear he will disavow the team if they get caught. Churchill would retire and die of a stroke in 1965.

The real Gubbins, (Colin Gubbins), was born in 1896 and oversaw the Prime Minister's Special Operations Executive (SOE). He ran point for many of these special black ops missions. When the SOE was disbanded in 1946, he'd move into the carpet and textile business. He died at home in the Hebrides in 1976.

The real Ian Fleming was born in 1908. He worked for the British Empire and Gubbins in real life, assisting with covert missions. This work would help him form the vision for his James Bond novels when he left military duty. Fleming died in 1964 from a heart attack.

Actor Name |
Alan Michael Ritchson |

Alan Ritchson plays Anders Lassen, a Danish soldier who is Gus' main weapons expert. He loves using his bow and arrow to accurately murder Nazis. Of course, as the main muscle, he uses guns, grenades and blades, too.
The real Lassen was born in 1920 in Denmark. He joined the British Commandos in 1940 and was awarded the Military Cross for his part in Operation Postmaster. He became the only non-Commonwealth recipient of the British Victoria Cross during World War II. Sadly, he died in the field in Italy in 1945 during Operation Roast. The film ages Lassen up and makes him a one-man wrecking crew.

Eiza González plays Marjorie Stewart, a Jewish undercover agent. She hates Nazis for killing her people. She pretends to deal gold to Nazis to infiltrate the Fernando Po base off the coast of West Africa. This Spanish colony is where the target boats are, so her job is to distract the Nazis while Gus' team destroys the ships.
The real Marjorie did work for the SOE, but it wasn't confirmed if she was in the field, or remained behind the desk. She did marry Gus, however, so there might be credence to her being this sort of Black Widow-like master of disguise.

Henry Ewan Golding |
Date of Birth |
Feb. 5, 1987 |
Notable Movies |
Crazy Rich Asians, A Simple Favor, Snake Eyes |

Henry Golding's Freddy Alvarez is the bomb expert in Gus' team. He loves swimming, rigging Nazi ships to blow, and cracking jokes about it. He is also a sharp shot, which Gus values a lot.
However, Freddy is a fictional character that Ritchie makes up. Ritchie does like collaborating with Golding, as seen in The Gentlemen movie where he played a gangster named Dry Eye. Golding is British, so it adds to the authenticity of the narrative.

Date of Birth |
Nov. 6, 1997 |
Notable Movies |
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Woman King |
Notable TV Shows |
Safe, Cleaning Up |
Hero Fiennes Tiffin portrays Henry Hayes, a young man who also enlisted because he hates what the Nazis represent to freedom. He is Gus' understudy -- not much of a talker, but one of Gus' best combatants. Admittedly, Henry is a tad hot-headed, but he is quite effective.
Henry Hayes' character is modeled after Graham Hayes. Hayes was born in 1914 and was awarded the Military Cross for Operation Postmaster. He specialized in boating missions. He died in 1943 at the hands of French enemies in Operation Aquatint. The Axis hunted him for a while, and when they got him, they tortured and shot him to death.

Babs Olusanmokun's Heron is an SOE undercover agent who works with Marjorie. Their role is to distract the Nazis with a party on Fernando Po island, allowing Gus' crew to get to the Nazi boats. He is deadly with a knife and gun, acting as the brawn to Marjorie's brain.
Heron is fashioned after the real life SOE agent, Richard Lippett. Lippett pretended to be a businessman and did indeed come up with the party misdirection. Lippett was made a MBE for his dedication to the job.
Danny Sapani Is the Cavalier Kambili Kalu

Danny Sapani |
Date of Birth |
Nov. 15, 1970 |
Notable Movies |
Mercenaries, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever |
Notable TV Shows |
Penny Dreadful, Killing Eve, Halo |
Danny Sapani's Kambili Kalu is a pirate Heron brings in once he realizes they need extra hands on deck. Kambili is wary at first, but he takes to Gus due to their love of cricket. Notably, Kambili's entire team was created from scratch, but the concept of them is true.
Lippett hired the pirates as they were in close proximity to the island. Ritchie smartly plays up these underrated pirates, who were a lot more important to the mission than the press and historical archives let on.
Til Schweiger Is the Sinister Heinrich Luhr
Actor Name |
Tilman Valentin Schweiger |
Date of Birth |
Dec. 19, 1963 |
Notable Movies |
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider -- The Cradle of Life, The Three Musketeers |
Notable TV Shows |
Die Kommissarin, Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin |
Til Schweiger's Heinrich Luhr is the Nazi commander on the island. He loves food, drinks, and abusing women. He sets his eyes on Marjorie, thinking she wants to trade goods. He represents oppression, fascism and toxic masculinity as he gloats about Nazi power.
Lurh is created just for the film. He has that energy of Nazi villains found in movies like Inglourious Basterds. He does feel one-dimensional, but as with most Nazi commanders and generals, they were all about business and lurid recreation.
Henrique Zaga Is the Shady Captain Binea
Actor Name |
Henrique Chagas Moniz de Aragão Gonzaga |
Date of Birth |
Apr. 30, 1993 |
Notable Movies |
XOXO, The New Mutants |
Notable TV Shows |
Teen Wolf, Trinkets, Nancy Drew |
Henrique Zaga's Captain Binea is one of the Spanish commanders working with Luhr. He has plausible deniability because Fernando Po is a Spanish colony. He spends most of his time drinking and brokering deals with whoever has more money, whether it be Heron or the Nazis.
Binea is another character made for the movie. That said, he does fit the mold of what Fernando Po was about. It was an island built on debauchery, where many Spanish soldiers and business people sought trade deals. They knew they could make money by sending food, fuel and other items to the highest bidders. Due to how Germany controlled the waterways, the Nazis were usually first-choice.
