Should I watch The Many Saints of Newark?

[Many Saints of Newark]

As mentioned in a previous post, I recently finished watching the series. Anyway, I was planning on watching the movie after I finished it, but recently I've learned that it received mixed reviews. I've been seeing comments from fans saying it wasn't good or even calling it a disgrace to the show. I want to hear what you guys think. Do you recommend me watching it or not?

In the words of Hesh “well…. It’s not good”.

There's good and there's not good.

A hit is a hit, and this my friend is not a hit!

What is your view on the transformative value of suffering?

Sounds like someone discovered existentialism.

I guess you could call that a movie

If you have two hours you’ll never get back to spare, go for it. But if you’re doing it for nostalgia, be prepared to be disappointed. “Remember When is the lowest form of conversation.”

No, it's a pice of shit.

I don’t know how something could be cast so perfectly only to turn to be a huge disappointment. The entire plot was a waste of amazing talent and a let down to one of the greatest tv shows of all time. Maybe would’ve worked better as a miniseries, go into more detail. I feel like too much of it was spent about Harold and the black struggles and riots in Newark. Sure, add it to the plot but it’s a movie and there just wasn’t enough time to go down this character development of someone and the scenes just weren’t pieced together well. I think a miniseries would have been more appropriate with that storyline instead of cramming it into 2 hours.

Vera Farminga as Livia kind of made up for all that though… I loved every scene she was in

Watch it understanding it is not the show. It is enjoyable. If you watch it in the context of the show, you won't like it.

THIS. It’s good if you just watch it as a movie. It’s NOT good if you compare it to the greatest TV show of all time. That’s where most people go wrong with it.

We don't like to talk about that movie

u/ActualSeller23 avatar

If you approach it as a B rated gangster flick and not an offshoot of the sopranos, you'll enjoy it. Gandolfini and Nivola are good

It's worth a watch. There are lots of things I would like to have seen done differently, but it is what it is.

A hit is a hit and The Many Saints of Newark is not a hit.

I mean neither was that episode, whatever happened there?

If you need a sopranos fix, def watch it but overall it’s not great

I thought it was ok, worth a watch. Better than the endless stream of super hero crap

Getting shot to death by Janice is better than the endless stream of super hero crap

It’s worth a watch.

The movie is just okay.

u/I__Need_Scissors_61 avatar

Honestly? It sucks.

u/Lateapexer avatar

Go to the car wash and get the 50 cent movie instead.

u/MiddleRowAnon avatar

It’s not good. But it has some cool Easter eggs. Just go in with low expectations and you’ll be fine.

u/foxystoat1980 avatar

Of course you should watch it. Just go in with low expectations.

It's not great but there's worse out there.

That was real? I saw that movie, I thought it was bullshit!

It’s a cock suckin piece of fuckin shit. Sorry T. It had to be said.

Nobody's watchin TMSON! I don't wanna hear that word in here again!

I agree in spirit, but I gotta counsel.

It's a cool nostalgia trip

Yeah it’s only a few hours of your life so y knot? It takes a few viewings to understand how little sense it actually makes It’s a cobbled together mess

I tried multiple times to watch it,couldn't get through it manages to be incredibly boring

My pain a source of entertainment for you?

No

u/tunacan8 avatar

No. Not worth your time. Trust me.

u/ExpatHist avatar

It tries to do too much in too little screen time.

No, I couldn’t finish it shit made me so fuckin pissed

u/jdcgonzalez avatar

I wish I was there so I could throw acid in its face.

u/Nynydancer avatar

I really liked mainly because of young Tony it but I do prefer the flashbacks of the tv series. I loved the very last scene and the musical moment that went with it. It gave me chills.

u/Spithotlava avatar

“Mixed reviews” of this remind me of the Norm joke “it’s been called everything from ‘shit’ to ‘fucking shit.’”

Sisters cunt! You better so you can watch him ring the bell alllll the way home

I went to the premiere. DeNiro speaking before the movie was the best part

We don't talk about that. Not now and never here

No. I’m a hardcore Sopranos fan and I thought the movie was totally uninteresting.

u/El0vution avatar

It won’t be cinematic

Yes. I recommend seeing MSON. It covers Tony Sopranos early years, focusing on his relationship with Dickie Moltisanti, Christopher's father. Ignore the haters. See the movie.

u/Accurate_Hunt_6424 avatar

It isn’t great, but I still enjoyed it. There’s an entire subplot with African American gangsters that I have no idea why it’s in the film, almost feels like a separate movie itself. Especially since none of those characters were ever alluded to in the TV series. I’d say watch it, but no going in that it isn’t perfect.

u/GlitteringHold8685 avatar

It gives some background about Dickie and the overall family but nothing about young Tony the upcoming gangster. I’ve said my piece.

I liked it. It’s interesting for the most part but it’s not crucial that you do.

Godfather 3 is probably streaming somewhere

Yes

I watched it and just kept it as separate from the show. Yeah it’s got lore that ties in but it feels very different from the show.

There are two types of bad movies - The Room, and Left Behind (2014). The first is so bad it's good, the second is so bad it should be forgotten by time.

MSON is the latter.

Nope, wish I could unwatch it. Had very little to do with Tony Soprano's story. The biggest clickbait movie I've ever seen. David Chase had other intentions and motivations when making this load of crap.

u/StuntMedic avatar

Watch it for the young Tony and Livia scenes

u/use_til_die avatar

Technically you're not really a fan of Sopranos if you haven't seen Many Saints and not come back here to bitch about it. Kinda part of the whole thing

No. Unless you want to ruin the show

You should watch it. I got in down in my trunk. They were giving it away at the carwash.
