I enjoyed this movie. It was modernized, but kept true to the cold war age and 60's fashions. It didn't become just another action flick. It was cleverly funny. Solo and Kurikan are really well cast. There is a lot of satire to their characters. Anyone could have played the other two characters. I remember the original TV show and this was a good update, but not as campy.

So wonderful! I laughed and laughed and it was all so visually gorgeous - the sets, the clothes, the hair, the make-up, the cast... All just perfect. This is a movie that doesn't take itself overly seriously (like Bonds or MIs) and is wittily funny and exciting. Doesn't get caught up in overly complicated drama to delude the audience into thinking it's clever. Develops interesting and fun characters that are incredibly endearing. I completely fell in love with Ilya played by Armie Hammer - so charmingly acted! And no one could more perfectly embody the sound and look of the time than Henry Cavill as Solo - the way he pronounced Nazi and his vocal prosody! While Alicia Vikander has such star quality and loads of classic Hollywood moxie. And her character Gabby (who has the most fabulous wardrobe) is a great inclusion to the UNCLE universe. Loved Hugh Grant's character - small part but he steals his scenes with great dialogue so amusingly delivered. I don't think I've ever enjoyed him more! Basically, GREAT cast. Also, wonderful direction - liked the incorporation of retro shots and transitions. Conclusion, watch this film.

Such an undervalued/unknown gem. I honestly think people didn't know what they were missing! I've seen film reviews that said it was stupid or cheesy, but I don't think it crosses the line into cheesy, though it comes adorably close. This is actually a very clever film with charmingly dry dialogue and great characters. Anything so funny requires loads of intelligence - particularly when so much of the humor is based on character relations and is very tongue and cheek, recognizing the stereotypes and silliness of the day and incorporating them in a way that allows us to laugh at the ridiculousness (all the overlapping, conflicting, selfish agendas), yet in a nice way. It's just simple, pure, golden fun. I think the main popularity problem is that it was under advertised - people didn't know what it was. Another contributing factor is probably that the humor style is in more of an English style than American - aka, it doesn't have to stoop to being crass, loud, gross, or raunchy. If you can't appreciate this film's humor, it's just a sad loss to you.

Anyways, this film is great! Do give it a try - everyone I've talked to that saw it at least enjoyed it and most loved it. I hope they make a sequel, but just as its single self, it is exquisite - and I'm so glad they made it. You know how people didn't get The Princess Bride when it was in theaters yet it became huge when it came out on video and word of mouth spread? This is a movie with that same quality of misunderstood, under recognized greatness. Hopefully the word of mouth spreads so people can enjoy it. Because it really is just joyful!

I struggled with 2 or 3 stars for this, and it finally just barely edged up to 3.

No, I didn't see Heineken presented even once in this film. Read on, and you'll see what I mean.

Overall, this was a feature-length Heineken commercial. The people are so shattering attractive and costumed and blocked and shot so magnificently in cool locations with cool music and cool dialog, that I was too often overwhelmed by the sheer production perfection to pay attention to the story. Everyone was perfect, so perfect that it distracted from the narrative that all of this other stuff is supposed to be supporting. I mean, even the bad guys, with their predictable slicked-back hair and moustaches, had awesome presented clothing, in an f***k'd-up Moods of Norway kind of way.

And the story. When I was able to actually pay attention to the story, it was bad. The opening sequence with the two Trabants in chase was patentl ridiculous on so many levels, if anything for their legendary lack of the horsepower of a lawn mower. Scenes and dialogs, character actions and the story twists all didn't really make a lot of sense; eventually it became clear to me that the narrative was merely a supporting mechanism for the flawless production. This meticulously crafted and filmed production is what got this rating from 2 to 3 stars.

Bottom line: If you like those ultra-mod Heineken commercials with cool people doing exceedingly cool things while dressed cool and being cool, with cool music playing in far-out cool places, you should freekin' love this movie. If you're more into logical and more clearly presented cinematic spy-movie storytelling, this isn't going to work for you.

Die Verfilmung von erfolgreichen Fernsehserien geht oft daneben. So wurde "Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone" die von Jeremiah S. Chedwick (National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) inszenierte Neuauflage von Emma Peel und John Steed ein Mißerfolg. Obwohl die beliebten Filmstars Uma Thurman und Ralph Fiennes in die Rollen von Diana Rigg und Patrick McNee schlüpften. Auch Michael Mann wurde mit "Miami Vice" - trotz Hochkarätern wie Colin Farrell und Jamie Foxx stark kritisiert. Die Reihe der Flops könnte man schnell mit weiteren Beispielen fortsetzen. Eine rühmliche Ausnahme dürfte aber Guy Ritchies Neuauflage der amerkanischen Agenten-Kultserie gelungen sein. Seine Kinovariante von "Solo für Onkel" (Original: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) ist ihm durch das Zusammenspiel der beiden unterschiedlichen Hauptfiguren Napoleon Solo und Ilya Ilya Kuriakin äusserst spannend und auch witzig gelungen. In die Rollen von Robert Culp und David McCallum schlüpften in Ritchies Verfilmung der Brite Henry Cavill als US-Spion Solo, der US-Schauspieler Arnie Hammer darf den impulsiven und immer kampfbereiten russischen Gegenpart spielen. Die alte Serie lief in den 60er Jahren erfolgreich im deutschen Fernsehen (ZDF), ungefähr zur gleichen Zeit wie "Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone" und zählte zu den beliebtesten Serien der bundesdeutschen Fernsehzuschauern in diesem Jahrzehnt.

Die Story beginnt gleich mit einer wunderbaren Dosis Retrocharme, die den ganzen Film durchzieht und führt den CIA-Agenten Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) nach Ost-Berlin. Es ist 1963, es ist die Zeit des kalten Krieges. Grund für den Besuch im Arbeiter- und Bauernstaat ist das Verschwinden des deutschen Atomwissenschaftlers Udo Teller (Christian Berkel), der im Krieg für die Nazis arbeitete und danachvon den Amis für die Forschung gewonnen wurde. In den Staaten hat der Mann ein neues Leben angefangen - allerdings ist er vor kurzem spurlos verschwunden. Der CIA vermutet, dass er für eine internationale Nazi-Verbrecherbande eine Atombombe entwickelt, die ohne die bisherige Uran-Anreicherung funktioniert. Mit Hilfe seiner Tochter Gaby (Alicia Vikander), die in der DDR als KFZ-Mechanikerin arbeitet, will man den Vater wieder ins Boot der "Guten" holen. Gaby soll daher mit Solo in den Westen fliehen. Die Flucht muss schnell gehen, denn der KGB ist informiert und die beiden werden von den Agenten Illya Kuriakin (Arnie Hammer) verfolgt. Sie können ihn abschütteln. Wenig später ist aber die Zusammenarbeit der beiden Weltmächte erforderlich. Im Kampf gegen die Nazis, die in den Besitz einer Atombombe gelangen könnten, müssen die USA und Russland zusammenarbeiten. So bleibt den beiden ungleichen Spionen nichts anderes übrig, als gemeinsam gegen böse Nazis wie Gabys sadistischen Onkel Rudi (Sylvester Groth) und dem Ehepaar Vinciguerra (Elisabeth Debicki, Luca Calvani) zu kämpfen. Die Misson sieht vor nach Rom zu reisen, Kuriakin muss sich dabei als Verlobter der hübschen Gaby ausgeben...
Diese Konstellationen im Drehbuch ergibt einen witzigen wie spannendsgeladenen Agentencocktail. Die beiden Hauptdarsteller ergänzen sich prima, einerseits der immer etwas arrogante Ami und auf der anderen Seite der Russe, dem es nicht leicht fällt seine Konflikte auf die bewährte russische Art (einfach mal in die Fresse des Gegners hauen) zu lösen. Er muss sich daher immer zurückhalten. Und seine falsche Verlobte zeigt ihm immer mal wieder die kalte Schulter, obwohl er die Reize der schönen deutschen Mechanikerin schon längst entdeckt hat. In "Codename U.N.C.L.E" steckt viel 60s Flair und nicht nur optisch erinnert die Story immer mal wieder an die ganz alten James Bond Klassiker mit Sean Connery. Wer Agentenfilme mag, die sich nicht so ernst nehmen und auch Sinn dafür hat, dass der Macher immer wieder inne hält und den perfekten Retrostyle mit einer guten Portion Ironie würzt, der darf sich immer wieder auf begeisternde Einlagen freuen. Für mich der beste Ritchie Film seit langem.

Ist einer meiner Lieblingsfilme, er ist so gut, dass es eine Schande ist, dass er nur so wenig Beachtung geschenkt bekommt und dadurch keine Fortsetzung in Sicht ist. Der Film ist trotzdem in sich abgeschlossen und hat wirklich alles was man sich wünschen kann Action, comedy, romance, plot twists ,… er hat einfach einen ganz besonderen Charme und ist für Fans von Spionfilmen ein muss.
Für mich ist das ein perfekter Film :)

... aber eigentlich gab es das ja alles schon. Und zwar im Jahr 1964. Da startete die US-Fernsehserie -The Man From U.N.C.L.E.- Robert Vaughn und David McCallum waren damals für den C.I.A. und den K.G.B. als Spezialteam unterwegs. In Deutschland liefen die Folgen 1967 und 68 im ZDF. Jetzt kommt Guy Ritchie daher und legt sozusagen den Pilotfilm für die Serie vor. Über 50 Jahre später! Unglaublich. Wer Ritchie kennt, der weiß, dass er ein absoluter Filmfreak ist. Was er aus -The Man From U.N.C.L.E.- gemacht hat ist allerfeinstes Agentenkino mit jeder Menge schwarzem Humor, wunderbaren Dialogen, reichlich Slapstick und einer Kulisse der Städte Berlin und Rom aus dem Jahr 1963, die hervorragend gelungen ist. Ganz nebenbei besetzt Ritchie seine weibliche Hauptrolle mit der Oscargewinnerin Alicia Vikander(Gaby), die er ganz nah an Rachel Weiszs Figur in -Brothers Bloom- anlehnt, besetzt Hugh Grant und die deutschen Schauspieler Sylvester Groth und Christian Berkel in Nebenrollen und lässt den Hauptpart der Agenten Napoleon Solo(Henry Cavill) und Illya Kuryakin(Armie Hammer) durch relativ unbekannte Mimen darstellen. C.I.A. Agent Napoleon Solo soll die Tochter des Atomwissenschaftlers Teller aus Ostberlin holen. Teller wurde von einem Geheimbund entführt, der mit der Herstellung einer Atombombe die Weltherrschaft erringen will. Solos Auftrag im Osten der Stadt verläuft normal, bis plötzlich der russische Agent Kuryakin auftaucht. Doch die Flucht gelingt. Solo ist um so mehr erstaunt, als er plötzlich mit Kuryakin zusammen arbeiten soll. Die USA und die UdSSR sind daran interessiert, dass die Bombe nicht in die falschen Hände gerät. So machen sich Solo, Kuryakin und Gaby Teller auf den Weg nach Rom. Dort soll die zwielichtige Victoria Vinciguerra(Elizabeth Debicki) die Fäden des Verbrechens in der Hand halten. Solo und Kuryakin trauen sich zwar selbst nicht über den Weg, aber sie nehmen den Auftrag an.

Was für ein Spektakel! Guy Ritchie kann es noch immer. Mit spritzig scharfen Dialogen, wunderbaren Actionszenen, und herrlich agierenden Schauspielern. Allein die Trabi-Verfolgungsfahrt am Anfang des Films ist schon ein echter Knaller. Es folgen noch jede Menge Highlights. Ich persönlich habe mich ganz weit in meine Kindheit zurückversetzt gefühlt und mich phantastisch unterhalten lassen. Wer weiß, vielleicht klappt das bei Ihnen ja auch. Probieren sie es aus...
