Product Description
Based on the novel by celebrated writer Frances Hodgson Burnett (THE SECRET GARDEN), this is the story of the educated but penniless Emily (Lydia Wilson, SOUTH RIDING). During her duties as a lady's companion for Lady Maria (Joanna Lumley, ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS), she meets her employer's wealthy widower nephew, Lord James Walderhurst (Linus Roache, THE WINGS OF THE DOVE). Accepting his practical if unromantic marriage proposal, Emily finds solace in the company of Walderhurst's nephew Alec Osborne (James D'Arcy) and his glamorous wife, Hester (Hasina Haque), after Lord James leaves to rejoin his regiment. Emily, alone with the Osborns in an isolated country estate, increasingly comes under their control. She begins to fear for her life. Will Walderhurst return in time to save her?

I adored the hesistancy and sweetness of their blossoming love. They were darling together. Where the story suffers is after he is called to India, and Emily is left alone at the manor. When the cousin and his Indian wife and her maid impose themself on her, I am cringing and shaking my head in disbelief for the remainder of the film. **some spoilers ahead**
Emily suffered from something called 'being a little too nice.' It nearly cost her her life. I could understand her compassion for her new relations. They were blacksheep in the family, and I'm sure she felt kinship with them, being Lord Walderhurst's 'unsuitable' bride, herself. However, when your husband expresses a firm distaste or aversion for a certain person or people, it probably isn't the best idea to allow them to stay with you in his absence. If I didn't know the history or root of the dislike for this relation and his wife, I would have been a lot more cautious than our trusting heroine. Especially considering that he would be the legal heir of your husband's wealth, without you and your potential children in the picture.
That said, the Osbornes - for all their depravity - were somewhat bumbling criminal masterminds. With the opportunities they had in that isolated house, with ineffectual servants and no one to really stop them, they should have been able to get rid of Emily far sooner. I don't understand why they wasted so much time. It was like they were slowly bleeding Emily dry, but I couldn't understand what their endgame was. So they want to own the house? Ok, so they need her to die, basically? Yet, they didn't actually try to kill her until the very end. I don't know. If it was me, and I was a greedy and wicked relation, I would have found a way to get rid of her without so much needless fanfare.
It was also odd to me how Lord Walderhurst came home and just accepted the cousin's wife and her nurse/servant were in his house and momentarily believed their claim of Emily's death. I'd be like, "Uh wth, where's my butler and where's my wife??" If it weren't for Hester Osborne's change of heart, Emily really would have died, right under his nose.
Still, it was an interesting and suspenseful ride. I think I would have liked it better as a two or three part mini series, just to let the story breathe a bit, and give us more insight to all of the otherwise interesting characters. Enjoyable watch with a happy - though a tad rushed - ending. Would recommend for gothic romance lovers.
Lydia Wilson plays the impoverished yet educated Emily Seton, who works as a temporary secretary for a rich woman, Lady Maria Byrne (Joanna Lumley). Lady Byrne wishes to see her widowed nephew, Lord James Walderhurst (Lionel Roache) re-married and parades a string of American heiresses in front of him. Yet it is slight and pretty Emily that draws Lord Walderhurt's attention and he proposes to her. Emily is initially reluctant as she wishes to marry for love, despite her impoverished circumstances. Nevertheless, she is persuaded to accept and finds herself installed as the new Lady Walderhurst in the secluded Walderhurst estate in the English countryside.
The strong chemistry between the two leads makes the romance subplot credible - Emily blossoms into a woman and the newlyweds find themselves discovering each other in tender and romantic ways. However, Walderhurst is called away to India to rejoin his regiment during the period of the Indian Mutiny, leaving hapless Emily alone in a strange new home, run by servants who though loyal to Lord Walderhurst, seem to consider Emily as nothing but an interloper. Then Walderhurst's cousin, the disgraced Captain Alec Osbourn (James D'Arcy) and his Indian wife come to visit, claiming Walderhurst wanted them to check in on Emily. The lonely Emily welcomes them to stay but things don't quite go as expected and take a turn for the worse.
The Gothic suspense in this film is well-done, with the right amount of pacing that made me hold my breath in many scenes. Lydia Wilson is amazing in portraying a helpless and rather naive young woman who yearns to be a proper lady, yet finds herself the victim of a heinous plot. The suspense is maintained throughout, almost till the end, and provided for a riveting evening's entertainment. I plan to get the DVD to add to my period drama collection.

I really enjoyed it when it was shown on TV and immediately ordered the DVD: however, it was never actually published in UK and I was therefore delighted to be able to get the PBS version.
