Evita: The Making of a Superstar, BBC2, 9pm
WHEN Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice announced they were writing a musical about a former first lady of Argentinia, some observers may have wondered just how much box office appeal it would have.
Forty years on from its West End opening, Suzy Klein discovers why Evita became an international hit. In addition to talking to some of the people involved in the musical’s success, including lyricist Rice, director Hal Prince and leading lady Elaine Paige, whose performance in the London cast made her a star, the presenter will be heading to Argentina to learn more about the story of the real Eva Peron.
In the process, she learns why Evita remains both an icon and a deeply divisive figure.
Strictly Come Dancing, BBC1, 6.50pm
TESS Daly and Claudia Winkleman return to the Elstree studio and the seven remaining couples must put in twice as much footwork with two dances. As well as the regular round of individual routines, all seven pairs must also perform in a Lindy Hop challenge. Shirley Ballas, Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood will rank their performances, offering the couples a chance to earn more points before the viewers’ vote, and potentially turn the leaderboard upside down.
John and Yoko: Above Us Only Sky, C4, 8.30pm
JOHN Lennon wrote an astounding number of classic songs but arguably the best-loved – of his solo work at least – is Imagine.
This documentary tells the untold story of the track and the album of the same name, drawing on previously unseen footage of Lennon and his wife and collaborator Yoko Ono. It also includes interviews with Ono, Lennon’s son Julian, John Dunbar (who introduced the couple) and Lennon’s former personal assistant Dan Richter.
The film also explores the album’s underlying message of radical engagement (although some fans may wonder where the track How Do You Sleep, which was a pretty pointed dig at Paul McCartney, fits in with that theme) and shows how its message remains relevant today.
Egypt’s Secret Tomb: Revealed, Channel 5, 9.10pm
EGYPTOLOGY is all the rage at the moment, particularly on Channel 5.
On Tuesday, Tony Robinson goes Egyptian tomb hunting, while this documentary looks at the discovery of the first sealed tomb in the Valley of the Kings for 100 years.
In 2011 Swiss archaeologists came across the entrance to a previously undiscovered tomb where they found the remains of a dismembered mummy and a coffin that was apparently 500 years younger than the tomb it sat in.
Part of the Ancient Mysteries series, the programme reveals a tale of ancient Egyptian grave robbing, desecration and the rise of a new elite.
