The Aftermath

When she joins him there during the bitter winter months, she learns they will be sharing their home with a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter. All in all, when taken at face value, the movie is well done in showing the turmoil and emotional toll on the lead characters and focuses well on those personal stories. The story arch is well thought out, if not a bit predictable. It is an enjoyable drama that gives a glimpse into what some lives were like after WWII and how no matter who "wins" the war, there are truly no winners, only those who survive and start new.
It is a story of loss, forgiveness and starting over. Alexander Skarsgard is excellent as a WWII German widower whose gorgeous home is newly occupied by a British couple, the amazing Kiera Knightly and the just okay Jason Clarke. Clarke is a colonel who is stationed in Germany after the end of WWII. He brings his long-suffering wife to live with him. They are broken people, mourning the loss of their only child. Clarke is consumed by his work and Knightly and Skarsgard have an affair but really, the pair are scarred by war and find comfort in each other's mutual grief. Skarsgard' s character lost his beloved wife in the war.
There are two very short sex scenes but they are nuanced compared to most films today. The actors are remarkable and its hard not to root for Skarsgard and Knightly. They have real on screen chemistry. Fans of Alexander Skarsgard won't be disappointed and Knightly shines in another strong role, reminiscent of the amazing but heartbreaking ATONEMENT.
