Leigh Bardugo is the number one New York Times bestselling author fantasy novels and the creator of the Grishaverse. With over one million copies sold, her Grishaverse spans the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Six of Crows duology and The Language of Thorns. She was born in Jerusalem, grew up in Los Angeles, graduated from Yale University, and has worked in advertising, journalism, and most recently, makeup and special effects. Ich muss ehrlich gestehen, dass ich nicht so recht wusste, was mich zwischen den Seiten erwarten würde, bevor ich dieses Buch aufgeschlagen habe. Da ich jedoch alles von Leigh Bardugo lesen würde, habe ich auch dieses Büchlein gekauft und hierbei tolle Einblicke in die verschiedenen Kulturen und Glaubensrichtungen im Grishaverse bekommen. Das Buch besteht aus kürzeren Geschichten zu allen Heiligen, die im Laufe der Bücher erwähnt werden und darüber hinaus. Dazu git es immer eine passende, wunderschöne Illustration, die das ganze Buch lebendig machen.

Aufmachung: dieses Buch ist einfach nur wunderschön gestaltet. Das Cover wirkt durch das satte Rot und den goldenen, filigranen Goldverzierungen sehr edel und passt somit perfekt zur Thematik. Auch im Buch findet man die verschnörkelten Verzierungen an den Seitenrändern wieder und auch die Illustrationen sind bunt und formatfüllend neben den Text gesetzt. Es macht einfach nur Spaß in den Seiten zu schmökern!

Die Illustrationen wirken dabei sehr verträumt und könnten so genauso gut an einer Decke in einem Schloss zu finden sein. Ich finde sie unglaublich ansprechend.

Das Buch ist recht kurz. Es werden tatsächlich immer nur über wenige Seiten die Sagen der Heiligen in dem Universum geschildert, aber selbst in der Kürze der Seiten schafft es Leigh Bardugo erneut zu verzaubern und unerwartete Wendungen einzubauen. Meine liebsten Heiligen waren wohl:

- Sankta Vasilka (eine beeindruckende Geschichte, über eine Frau, die ihr Schicksal selbst bestimmt)

- Sankt Valentin (schaurig, düster und mit einem gerechten Ende)

- Sankta Magda (traurig, aber gleichzeitig hoffnungsvoll - ich mochte die Botschaft dahinter)

Für alle Fans von Leigh Bardugo ist dieses Buch ein Muss. Wunderschön aufgemacht und endlich erfährt man, was sich hinter den ganzen Heiligen im Grishaverse verbirgt. Mir konnten zwar nicht alle Heiligen zusagen, aber das habe ich auch nicht erwartet. Von mir gibt es 4/5 Sternen!

A fun read. Expands the universe and the religious beliefs of the people in Grishaverse. Especially good world building due to the religious undertones of all books in the Grishaverse. Not really something I would recommend if you aren't a big fan of the Grishaverse. This is literally mostly fun world building. I liked it, but unless you are trying to expand your understanding of the universe I would not recommend. The short stories aren't really interesting enough to stand on their own.
Interesting contrast with the language of thorns as some of the Saints seem like a different interpretation of the fairy tales in that book

Excuse me I get fandom, but even if you are a fan of someones writing doesn't make every splotch of ink a masterpiece. This is just UTTERLY horrible ? you can read it to a 5 year old and thats the language its written in,
crude and oversimplified ....just...what is this ? Im sure if you put some effort in it you can write short stories that aren't that bland of a writing style. I really hated this..

Wonderful addition to the Grishaverse with excellent illustrations

As a massive fan of both the Grishaverse and mythology/lore, it was only a matter of time until I needed to get my hands on Leigh Bardugo’s The Lives of Saints, the latest book set in said universe. Described as a beautiful collection of tales of saints directly out of the Grishaverse with stunning full-colour illustrations of said stories, this book promised to be a fast, yet delightful read.

I have to admit that the sheer thought of getting to know more of the lore of the Grishaverse was already enough to make me want to read the book. I’m also easily swayed with beautiful illustrations, thus it isn’t exactly surprising that I enjoyed this book a lot. It is also noticeable that this book features several stories about saints, so it’s more like a short story collection than a whole novel. For me, that meant that I wouldn’t treat it as a novel and was probably way more generous with my rating than normally.

The Lives of Saints is a real-life replica of the Istorii Sankt’ya, the book of saints inside the Grishaverse. The real-life version of the book can be found inside one of the stories, featured as an illustration. This may sound like some sort of inception, but personally, I enjoyed seeing that connection. Overall, the illustrations for each saint were excellent. Artist Dan Zollinger really captured the essence of each saint and their corresponding story and I thought that his style couldn’t be more fitting. The illustrations helped the book a lot because without them I might not have enjoyed anything as much as I did.

I adore Bardugo’s style of writing, though I didn’t find it as compelling as in her other works. This might be due to the fact that these are short stories, without any dialogue. But it was still charming and I liked the variety of saints – even though most of the stories followed a similar path. But as I already mentioned, I was far more generous with my rating this time. Mostly because I loved the nostalgia to be back inside one of my comfort universes and the whole lore just made me happy.

Leigh Bardugo’s The Lives of Saints is a beautiful addition to the already existing novels of the Grishaverse, even though you don’t need to read it to understand the rest of the world. Still, I am glad that I picked this one up because it made me crave both the Shadow and Bones series as well as the Six of Crows duology and I might as well re-read both (especially with Shadow and Bone coming to Netflix this year)!
