Product Description
In the gripping thriller “The Lincoln Lawyer,” Matthew McConaughey stars as Michael “Mick” Haller, a slick, charismatic Los Angeles criminal defense attorney who operates out of the back of his Lincoln Continental sedan. Having spent most of his career defending petty, gutter- variety criminals, Mick unexpectedly lands the case of a lifetime: defending a rich Beverly Hills playboy (Ryan Phillippe) who is accused of attempted murder. However, what initially appears to be a straightforward case with a big money pay-off swiftly develops into a deadly match between two masters of manipulation and a crisis of conscience for Haller.

Smooth operator Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) zips around Los Angeles in his chauffeured Lincoln town car, cutting deals and finding clients on the road. Then he lands a doozy: a rich real-estate heir (Ryan Phillippe) accused of the brutal assault of an escort. At first, the case looks like a breeze, but odd details start nagging at Haller until he recognizes an ugly connection to an earlier case--and realizes he's been set up in the strangest way. There are some deep implausibilities in The Lincoln Lawyer, but they hardly matter. This is a movie that cruises on charm and smart casting, from McConaughey as a man whose glib polish is betrayed by a streak of doubt, down to the detectives (solid performances from Bryan Cranston, Michael Paré, Michaela Conlin, and others) and lowlifes (Katherine Moennig as an unlucky hooker, Shea Whigham as a lazy snitch) that flesh out the legal world. Every character pops out, clean and distinct; this sort of web-of-deceit story line, full of twists and turns, depends on the audience clearly connecting all the players. Some moments get overstated or maybe don't make complete sense, but the zippy pace carries the audience over those bumps. The Lincoln Lawyer could easily turn into a television series, a sort of Rockford Files-esque mixture of procedure and puzzle making. Also starring Marisa Tomei, William H. Macy, Frances Fisher, John Leguizamo, and Josh Lucas as the prosecuting attorney who gives McConaughey some competition in the chiseled-looks department. --Bret Fetzer

Legal dramas and thrillers are very much a staple of the American film industry, many of them taken from novels by Jack Grisham. In this case, the source novel is by another prolific writer of excellent gritty ‘lawyers versus the bad guys’ books, Michael Connelly. Grisham uses his Southern roots and legal background to fuel the plots and atmosphere of his books. Similarly, Connelly, who moved from Florida to work as a crime reporter on the ‘LA Times’, brings a strong sense of place, and a feel for the LA crime beat, to his work. The first book in his ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ series, was published in 2005, and was the well-received start of a very successful series. There is now a TV series of the books on Netflix, but the original novel was made into this powerful film, in 2011. Connelly’s book was adapted by John Romano , a highly-regarded screenwriter, involved in (amongst other TV series) ‘Hill Street Blues’; ‘Banshee’; ’24’ and ‘LA Law’.
This winning writing combination provides us with a really sizzling, high octane, plot, and a sharp, entertaining, literate script. There are plenty of questions, twists and moments of serious jeopardy, surprises and heart-in-mouth scenes. And the court action is well-crafted, brisk and meaty. It is always important in a legal thriller, that the courtroom scenes are persuasive and nicely dramatic ~ we are not short-changed here.
LA is used really well by director Brad Furman, who is not an especially prolific film-maker. Here however, as the central character, lawyer Mickey Haller, is chauffeured around in his big black Lincoln Town Car, we see plenty of the city, and there are some great scenes involving motor bikes.
Haller is an interesting ‘hero’. He is, at best, morally questionable, in his behaviour and tactics. He defends a lot of pretty villainous characters, without scruple, and has no qualms about getting his hands a little grubby. This leads to interesting moral questions: justice is blind, and everyone deserves a defence, don’t they? And how far is it right to go, to defend a client?
The cast is a strong one. Halley is played with gusto and a sort of macho charm, by the wonderful Matthew McConaughey, exercising his Texan drawl to the full. But he is also very good in the scenes with his little daughter, when we see that there is a good man, underneath the 'wide-boy' exterior. Marisa Tomei, as his ex-wife Maggie, is also very good. And Ryan Phillippe, as the rich playboy Louis Roulet, apparently set up to look as though he has beaten up a young woman, is absolutely brilliant ~ controlled, entitled, chilly.
This isn’t Shakespeare or Spielberg, but it is a really first-rate thriller ~ 118 minutes of handsome, tricksy, thrills. 5 thoroughly engrossing Stars.
