Before he became a TV star in his own right, Paul O' Grady spent 20 as his alter ego, Lily Savage. Family and friends including Julian Clary, Sir Ian McKellen and Alan Carr plus his daughter, give us their fond memories of him. I will be watching, I was a fan of his, especially when he made For The Love of Dogs series.

Paul refined with age, but still had an acidic tongue at times.
There aren’t that many TV personalities who I genuinely still miss, but Paul is definitely one.
Its not that long that we were staying 2m apart, wearing masks and wiping household shopping down incase it had killer germs on it. The ignorance shouldn't be a surprise but yes, the Aids epidemic and the impact on the gay community was something else.
He was a clever creation from a talented person, I did get a bit tired of the vulgarity and harshness. Didn’t really get him on Blankerty Blank. Might have been better out of character.
As his character relied on stuff that wasn’t suitable for TV before 9pm.
That was part of his brilliance. He was a drag queen with a difference - his acerbic wit.
I was lucky to see him twice at the Palladium in the pantos - Cinderella and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I've also also read all his books.
It was nice to hear his daughter share her childhood memories. He sounded like a fun Dad. But he was great all round really and he will be sadly missed. One of the good ones!
I liked them both. You can’t beat Lily. I remember ‘An Audience With’ which was a total scream.
I saw him too in panto at the Palladium, He was brilliantly funny.
I’ve liked everything he’s done, loved the series he did on The Salvation Army too.
Will watch his program tonight.
I think I’ll watch it just for that. I bet he was an absolute riot as a grandfather.
Was it Cinderella? That was the best part he had of the two.
I'm about half way through the TV programme. You should read his books. The first one is hilarious, especially the part about the bushbaby!
The thing with Paul O'Grady is he never sugar-coated anything. I remember reading that when he was playing the Wicked Queen in panto, someone kept blowing a whistle. So, he stopped the panto and said to the audience, 'If the person blowing that whistle doesn't stop. I'll come and stick it where the sun don't shine!'
Never met him but its easy to see why he was so loved and admired and so sorely missed.
I bet! He doted on his grandchildren. I remember him speaking about how he liked reading them stories and playing the different characters , when they were little. I can imagine that would have been fun to see!
Yes it was, I’m sure he never kept to a script 😂
I’ve also read a couple of his early books…… I could hear his voice when reading through the chapters.
Sadly missed.
He's one celebrity that when I heard he'd died I was genuinely upset about. I was due to see him in Annie again last June, I kept saying it was the closest I'd get to see Lily again.
I was sad when he died because I knew there wasn't going to be anyone like him again. A real loss to showbiz
What an amazing life he had. I loved his rants, funny yet so true.
Gone to soon.
I saw in his will he left money to the Salvation Army (and a large legacy to Battersea as you might expect)
Now, see I'm the opposite - I thought Lily was a fabulous host on Blankety Blank. The Challenge repeats I've seen recently certainly stand up. There's a little reference here and there to Lily's 'lifestyle' and 'background' but it's not completely outrageous. Sometimes it was a very casual ad lib during a question which may or may not go over the heads of some people. "I never knew me father... I had loads of uncles though..... millions of uncles". No elaborating - Lily knows it's a family show but the inference is his mam was rather a LOT more than a right go-er but that was all that needed saying. Clever clever man.
Lily is engaging with the contestants, keeps everyone in line (Kenny Everett would have been hauled off the set....) and is generally a hoot.
