The epic saga of Elle and Noah finally comes to a close this week in The Kissing Booth 3, the third and final installment in Netflix’s teen romance trilogy.

Joey King, Joel Courtney, and Jacob Elordi are all back, reprising their roles as Elle, Elle’s best friend Lee, and Elle’s boyfriend Noah, respectively. Elle and Lee are getting ready to head off to college, and they want it to be the best summer ever. But when (spoiler alert!) Elle decides to go to Harvard to be with Noah instead of Berkeley to be with Lee, things get off to a rocky start. To make matters worse, Lee and Noah’s mother is selling the beach house.

Don’t worry, Elle has a plan to make things up to Lee: Completing their old “beach bucket list” which includes things like a slushie-drinking contest and an epic flash mob in a fancy restaurant. Elle is also trying to reassure Noah while maintaining a friendship with Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the dude who she kissed in the last movie. For a while it works—until it all comes crashing down.

HOW DOES THE KISSING BOOTH 3 END? WHAT IS THE KISSING BOOTH 3 ENDING EXPLAINED?

After spending her entire summer trying to make both Noah and Lee happy, everything backfires for Elle. Noah, thinking that he’s holding Elle back from going to Berkeley with Lee, breaks up with Elle. Then Elle forgets to meet Lee at the arcade, and the two have a huge argument. Oh, and just for an extra bit of chaos, Rachel breaks up with Lee, too. Everyone is miserable!

Then Elle gets some quality advice from Mrs. Flynn, aka the great Molly Ringwald. She decides, for once, to choose herself. Instead of going to Harvard to be with Noah, or going to Berkeley to be with Lee, Elle applies for a spring term program in video game design at the University of Southern California. Who knew that Elle was so interested in video game design? Not me!

Lee and Elle make up before Lee leaves for college, but Noah and Elle leave things in a weird place. “I’m sorry things didn’t work out between us,” Noah says.

“It is what is, Noah,” Elle replies with a sigh.

Then Elle aces her USC interview, gets into her program, and goes off to school. As she explains in a voiceover, she stays best friends with Lee all through college, until graduation. Wait, what? That can’t be it, right? Well, not quite.

WHO DOES ELLE END UP WITH IN THE KISSING BOOTH 3?

No one, sort of… But also, Noah, sort of! In the very last moments of the film, we flash forward six years. Elle is now rocking a very cute, very “recent college graduate” short pixie cut. Lee and Rachel are engaged now, and the three college graduates visit their old high school carnival, where—Lee and Elle are delighted to discover—a new generation of teenagers are still using the kissing booth.

And guess who should emerge from the crowd? It’s Noah, of course, now four years older in a fancy suit. Noah and Elle exchange pleasantries—Noah has offers for law firms in New York and LA, and Elle is designing video games at a small company—and it’s clear the spark of their romance is still alive.

“When I’m in town again, we should go for a ride together,” Noah tells Elle. “I’ll call you, OK?”

“Sure, yeah, if you’ve got time,” Elle replies.

“I’ve got time,” Noah says, staring at her in a very meaningful way. But do they kiss or what?!

Sadly, no. Elle watches him walk away, and then he turns back and looks at her, and sees her looking back at him. They smile at each other and wave, and while it’s not explicit, it’s implied that they are both still in love with each other.

The final shot of the film shows Elle and Noah riding bikes down the road and reaching toward each other. It looks like they made that ride happen after all. Again, while we don’t see it play out on screen, we can assume that Elle and Noah will, eventually, get back together.

Still, for die-hard fans of Elle and Noah, it’s tough knowing this star-crossed couple broke up for six years! Oh, well. Fanfiction heals all wounds.
