      Critics Consensus

A well-acted, intensely shot, action filled war epic, Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker is thus far the best of the recent dramatizations of the Iraq War.

Alec C While war can bring out the worst in us, it can also bring out a rush that we can't ignore! When a squad is given a new leader after there original one dies, they are unsettled with his dangerous risk-taking which eventually leads them into some dangerous situations. Foregoing the battlefield itself and examining the headspace of the soldiers who fight for our country, we are unsure if we should root for these characters as they take lots of unnecessary gambles! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review mark g This is a really great movie. You are there. Renner and Mackie both shine. Love this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/24 Full Review Eye C I have to say it… this is a great movie BUT way too hard to watch it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Forged S Ask any military veteran or any EOD guy and they'll tell you, this is by far the most accurate military movie ever made... Okay, I'm joking. Actually, they'll tell you the whole movie is garbage. A bit harsh, in my opinion. If you've ever read any of my reviews, you'll know that inaccuracies (the most cited reason this movie is panned by the military community) don't bother me. Well, that's not wholly true. In Hollywood, minor inaccuracies that are designed to enhance action or create tension are fine and in many cases are rather common troupes. It's those inaccuracies that are intentionally meant to discredit or demean that tend to bother me. Oftentimes, it'll lead to unnatural mischaracterizations that feel forced or out of place. When someone settles in to watch a movie and the subject matter they're familiar with is butchered so badly, it can definitely take away from the experience. Personally, I like this movie. Specifically, there are some real poignant moments of catharsis here. It's able to tap into the psychology of someone who has devoted themselves to a way of life so deeply they don't know how to reenter normal society, a real problem Government has failed to acknowledge. Plus, there are other movies that are far worse. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Josh D Patriotic emotion porn with little depth. We get it. Bombs are scary. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review The S "The Hurt Locker" is a solid war film that delivers on intense action and strong performances from its lead actors, particularly Jeremy Renner. The film does a good job of capturing the chaos and unpredictability of war, and it delves into the psychological toll that combat can take on soldiers. While the writing is generally sharp, there are a few moments that feel a bit heavy-handed or underdeveloped. The Hurt Locker is worth watching for fans of the genre, but it may not quite reach the heights of some of the all-time great war films. Wendy Ide Times (UK) ... An unflinching look at the personal cost of being really good at a really tough job. Sep 30, 2022 Full Review Ed Koch The Atlantic The Hurt Locker is without a doubt one of the best war pictures I have ever seen, and I have seen most of them. Jan 17, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online I probably should have seen this movie when I had the chance in theaters, but as a DVD it didn't live up to the hype, though it was well done. Rated: B+ Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review More enduring than your typical war movie, Bigelow has constructed a suspenseful and confident motion picture about addiction, filled with biting observations about why some go to war, and then why some stay. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Mark Johnson Awards Daily Evocative and unsettling, The Hurt Locker remains an outstanding and cautionary war drama. Jun 14, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Never does Bigelow falter in her direction, which, by adroitly alternating between muscular and sensitive, reapplies a recognizable face to a conflict that has largely slipped from the American public conscious with all the wispiness of a bad dream.
