Based on the novel by Max Evans and directed by Stephen Frears, The Hi-Lo Country charted a long and circuitous route to the big screen, and the final result proves that the material posed a major--and perhaps insurmountable--challenge for screen adaptation. It's easy to see why this contemporary Western was once a coveted project of director Sam Peckinpah; its codes of honor, male bonding, and hardened morality would've played nicely into Peckinpah's artistic legacy. There are clear echoes of Peckinpah in the screenplay by Walon Green (who wrote The Wild Bunch), and while the movie is blessed by Woody Harrelson's vivid performance as a reckless latter-day cowboy, Frears fails to maintain a compelling tone and the rest of the cast nearly fades into the background.

Billy Crudup (Without Limits) plays Harrelson's best pal, just returned to New Mexico from service in World War II with hopes of starting a cattle ranch free from the greedy clutches of a local rancher (Sam Elliott) who dominates the town of Hi-Lo like a bootclad kingpin. Harrelson joins in the effort, but tensions rise when he connects with the sultry seductress (Patricia Arquette) with whom Crudup has fallen inexplicably in love. Harrelson has provoked others as well, and he seems primed for a fall, but The Hi-Lo Country is a film out of balance. Memorable moments are found in abundance, and the film's period detail is impeccable, but Crudup's character is so underwritten and underplayed that his role as narrator and ostensible hero has minimal dramatic impact. By the time fate deals its inevitable blow, it's too late to care. Frears has suffered from similar missteps before (remember Mary Reilly?), and The Hi-Lo Country leaves you wondering what Peckinpah might have done with the novel he so dearly admired. --Jeff Shannon

If you like those out of era Cowboy dramas like "No Country For Old Men", "Hell Or High Water", "Yellowstone" you will love this. This was a career performance for Woddy Harrelson. It also features some really amazing modern western actors like Sam Elliot, James Gammon and Cole Houser. It's also the big screen debut for Penelope Cruz and features the master of under appreciated movies Billy Crudup. Just buy it. Or watch it anywhere you can if you know anyone who has it.

The novelist Max Evans is pretty well known in New Mexico and just passed a couple years ago. His novels are wonderful. Many may know of The Rounders which was made into a 1960's movie starting Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford but The Hi-Lo Country is the author's opus, IMO. The character Pete is based on Max himself and Big Boy upon his hard luck best friend Big Boy Hittson. The story is centered in NE New Mexico in and around the tiny town of Des Moines (fictional Hi-Lo). It is based upon real events just after WWII. Anyway, do yourself a favor and pick up the novel or watch the movie.

When you insert the disk for this movie it might as well auto-play for that is the only option available. There are no supplements, language options or even scene selections. It’s also one of those disks that will refuse to track accurately in your player so that it’s impossible to tell where you are and how much is left to play.

A horse opera that begins with a cowboy getting thrown from a standing horse. Doesn’t sound like a propitious beginning, does it? Woody Harrelson gives his usual over-the-top performance. Billy Cruddup on the other hand is understated as always, the kind of actor who inhabits his part without drawing attention to himself. The two make uncomfortable partners in style and in this movie. Billy’s character gives background narration throughout. The movie left me feeling uncomfortable as if something is missing but I just can’t put my finger on it.

Shot in 1998 at a time when Woody still had hair on his head. Cowboy Westerns were well past their heyday and open range worked by men on horseback had become a thing of the past. For the price this disk is well worth the price of admission.

Possible spoilers

Narrated by Billy Crudup one of those actors whose name you may remember seeing in a list of performers but most would find difficulty in identifying. I think it would be safe to say he has a love/hate relationship with Hollywood--it's where you go to make the movies but you don't want to get drawn in too tight. After all he refused the lead in Titanic to play a movie few have probably seen.

Ironic that at 6 1 Cole Hauser who plays Little Boy towers over his brother Big Boy. This movie turns the classic love triangle into a quadrangle as our two principals share an interest in another man's wife. Pete lusts after the unattainable while ignoring the woman who has always truly loved him. Is the baby whose name is to be Pete the child of his seed? Just asking.

A tribute to Sam Pekinpah and Walon Green...

This movie is basically for affectionados of Sam Pekinpah and Walon Green. The message of this film is that the nature of western life is underscored by the propensity of its people to live with recklessness and violence in generational terms. Think of it as sort of like, "The Wild Bunch" aftermath, about forty years beyond.
While the "Wild Bunch" was about the west during the period of industrialization around the turn of the century, "The Hi Lo Country" deals with the period of superindustrialization following World War II.
Woody Harrelson and Billy Crudup play two cowboys who fall for the same woman, Patricia Arquette. Harrelson as the violent "Big Boy" shows no sense of morality or humilty as the film's main protagonist, while Crudup as "Pete" is almost the exact opposite. Sam Elliot portrays a villanous rancher/industrialist, while the desirable Penelope Cruz is the overlooked, unrequitted love in Pete's life.
All of the actors turn in solid performances, but what makes this film special is the story itself, the direction, and Jerry Goldsmith's subtle, forceful soundtrack.

Enfin, ce rejeton mal aimé de la filmographie de Stephen Frears est disponible en dvd. Non pas que ce soit un chef-d'oeuvre absolu, loin de là. Mais quand on aime ce réalisateur éclectique aux multiples talents, on est très content de pouvoir avoir accès à cette oeuvre très attachante à défaut d'être complètement réussie.

On l'avait catalogué comme "réalisateur de films sociaux anglais", au même titre que Ken Loach et Mike Leigh, alors qu'ils n'ont pas grand-chose à voir entre eux. Au-delà de ces catégorisations hâtives, c'était vite oublier que Frears avait commencé avec deux films de genre en jouant avec leurs codes, Gumshoe et The Hit . L'auteur des Liaisons dangereuses avait auparavant réalisé une adaptation d'un roman de Jim Thompson, Les Arnaqueurs lorsque Martin Scorsese lui demanda s'il ne voulait pas adapter un roman de Max Evans écrit au début des années 60, The Hi-lo country . Ce qui fut fait en 1998. Depuis, l'on sait que Frears a continué à mener des projets très différents, au gré de ses envies, jusqu'à réaliser ce qui pour moi reste une des plus grandes comédies anglaises de ces dernières années, Madame Henderson présente , qui retrouve dans ses meilleurs moments quelque chose des comédies américaines de la grande époque.

Car Frears est aussi et peut-être avant tout un amoureux du cinéma américain classique. Il dit avoir été attiré par ce western se déroulant en 1946 dans le Colorado, certes parce que le livre avait un côté réaliste - les cow-boys en perte de vitesse, la main-mise des gros propriétaires (qui ont profité de la guerre) sur la terre alors que les petits (qui sont allés combattre en Europe) s'escriment pour pouvoir espérer subsister, etc. - mais surtout parce qu'il permettait de recréer un passé à la fois récent et pourtant si lointain dans ce genre très codifié: "Ce qui m'a séduit dans ce récit quand Scorsese me l'a proposé, c'était son mystère et l'envie pour moi de pénétrer dans ce territoire. C'était comme de visiter la Lune! La tentation était trop grande." Le tout semblait aussi lointain que le XVIIIème siècle, ajoute-t-il.

Il s'agit d'un western situé à l'époque de la modernité technique, à l'image de Seuls sont les indomptés . Avec des grands espaces vierges, mais aussi des villes déjà bien étendues, des voitures et des bus. Pete (Billy Crudup) et son ami qui n'a peur de rien, Big Boy (Woody Harrelson), essaient de se constituer un troupeau à leur retour du front, tandis que le frère de Big Boy et pratiquement tous les hommes qui sont restés pendant la guerre ont été mis au pas par Jim Ed, gros propriétaire mielleux pour lequel ils travaillent tous. Cette histoire d'amitié et de résistance des petits contre les gros se complique très rapidement, lorsque l'on comprend que la belle aguicheuse Mona (Patricia Arquette) avec laquelle danse Pete à son retour, et qui l'obsède, s'est mariée avec le contremaître de Jim Ed et va très vite devenir la maîtresse de Big Boy. Le trio amoureux est en fait un quatuor, avec l'adjonction de Josepha (Penelope Cruz), qui aime Pete. Le tout ayant quelques relents de film noir, la greffe prenant plutôt bien entre ces éléments et les tropes du western.

Dixit Frears toujours: "C'est plutôt l'histoire d'un monde en train de disparaître, et le genre qui l'illustre avec lui. Quand on m'a demandé de tourner un western, j'ai répondu qu'on ne pouvait le faire qu'en parlant de John Wayne. C'est ce que j'ai fait et c'est ce qui m'intéressait. Le film analysait sa propre condition de western." Il s'agit d'une sorte de méta-western, donc, bien différent des westerns crépusculaires qu'Eastwood avait imposés dans les années 80 et 90, qui culminèrent avec Impitoyable . S'ils parlent de la fin d'un genre qu'ils présupposent, la grande différence réside dans le fait qu'ici on est à la limite du pastiche, et qu'on essaie de retrouver le goût du romanesque à l'ancienne dans le même temps qu'on se penche sur l'histoire du genre.

A la sortie du film, la plupart des critiques ont tranché, et ont condamné l'exercice de style sans saveur. On peut effectivement comprendre que certains n'y voient pas la rasade de whisky tord-boyau qu'ils espéraient mais plutôt du western canada dry. On peut aussi apprécier le geste, l'élégance de la reconstitution et du filmage, le jeu contrasté de Crudup - acteur qui semble trop léger au début pour jouer les tourmentés et obsédés mais qui s'étoffe tout au long du film - et de Harrelson, parfait en cow-boy tête brûlée - un cow-boy toutefois bien différent de celui qu'il jouera dans The Last Show de Robert Altman. Egalement le sens de l'espace, les quelques scènes de bravoure (dont une très réussie dans le blizzard). Le film tout entier ressemble pour ainsi dire à la musique du compositeur attitré des frères Coen, Carter Burwell, à la fois pleine d'envolées et tonitruante, à l'ancienne, et pourtant savamment dosée, élégante comme celle qu'il compose pour les films des frères.

Outre que le Canada dry est rafraîchissant même quand on préfère le whisky patiemment vieilli en fût, on savourera d'autant mieux ce film qu'on pense que le genre n'est pas condamné à disparaître ou qu'il ne doit pas forcément être funèbre, même quand il parle de la fin - pour une autre réussite récente, voir Open Range de Kevin Costner. The Hi-Lo Country est un film très estimable, qui essaie de jouer à la fois sur la matière romanesque qu'il véhicule et le regard distancié qu'il peut avoir sur le genre. Même si on l'aimerait plus prenant, il n'en constitue pas moins une réussite dans ce genre.

La copie de cette édition est parfaite, respecte le format et les couleurs, ce qui est loin d'être toujours le cas dans ces éditions peu onéreuses. VOSTF et VF. Aucun bonus.

Zu Beginn steigt der Cowboy Pete Calder (Billy Crudup) mit einem Gewehr in seinen Wagen, um jemanden zu erschießen. Es folgt die Rückblende, Vorhang auf: Das weite Land, der Wilde Westen. Er erinnert sich daran, wie er einige Jahre vorher Big Boy Matson (Woody Harrelson) kennen lernte und sich mit ihm anfreundete, als er sein Pferd verkaufen wollte, weil die Chemie zwischen Reiter und Tier nicht mehr stimmte.
Es ist kurz vor dem zweiten Weltkrieg, aber im Hi-Lo Country scheint die Zeit stehen geblieben zu sein. Lediglich die Autos ersetzen immer mehr die treuen Vierbeiner.
Und immer mehr wird aus der traditionellen Viehzucht inmitten einer prächtigen, imposanten aber ruhigen Landschaft, ganz im Stile der Cowboys, auch eine lediglich auf Kommerz ausgerichtete industrielle Massentierhaltung eines Jim Ed Lowe (Sam Ellito) . Damit müssen die beiden Freudne erst einmal klarkommen, vor allem spitzt sich die Lage zu, als die beiden Freunde als Kriegsheimkehrer Mitte der 40er zurück ins weite Land kommen.
Selbst Big Boys kleiner Bruder Little Boy Watson (Cole Hauser) arbeitet inzwischen für den modernen Viehbaron. Und auch die hübsche Mona (Patricia Arquette) ist inzwischen mit dem alten Les Birk (John Diehl) verheiratet.
Obwohl Petes Jugendliebe Josepha (Penelope Cruz) immer noch die gleichen grossen Gefühle für ihn hegt, begehrt Pete immer mehr die verheiratete "leichte" Mona. Und plötzlich wird er noch damit konfrontiert, dass Mona bereits ein heimlichesVerhältnis mit Big Boy pflegt...
Der 1941 in Leicester geborene britische Filmemacher Stephen Frears gilt mit Meisterwerken wie "Mein wunderbarer Waschsalon", "Sammy and Rosie tun es", "Prick up your ears", die in England entstanden sind und auch durch seine formidablen US-Arbeiten wie "Dangerous Liasons" oder "Grifter" als einer der wichtigsten Regisseure der letzten Dekaden.
1998 entstand der etwas weniger bekannte Neowestern "Hi Lo Country", mit dem er allerdings 1999 bei den Berliner Filmfestspielen den silbernen Bären als bester Regisseur gewinnen konnte.
"Hi Lo Country" ist kein spektakulärer Reisser, eher ein stiller Film, der wie ein ruhiger Fluss fliesst. Er lässt sich Zeit vor grandiosen Bildern des immer noch existierenden Mythos amerikanischer Westen (Kameramann Oliver Stapelton) seine mit Stärken und Schwächen versehenen Figuren vorzustellen. Menschen mit Idealen, mit Leidenschaften, mit unterdrückten Gefühlen...
"Hi-Lo Country" eröffnet aber auf den zweiten Blick eine grosse Wucht, ist somit eine perfekte Hommage an den klassischen Western, aber es geht nicht um Revolverhelden wie einige Jahre zuvor bei der Eroberung des weiten Landes, sondern um Beziehung, um Ehre, um Männerfreundschaft, um Bruderstreit und vor allem um die unaufhaltsame Zerstörung alter Cowboy-Ideale durch den technischen Fortschritt.
Für Fans von anspruchsvollem Kino ein Muss. Ebenso für Fans von bleibenden magischen Kinobildern..."Hi Lo Country" ist klassisches, grosses Kino mit glauwürdigen klasse Darstellungen, unterlegt mit einem stimmigen Countrysoundtrack ala Willie Nelson, Hank Williams oder Carter Burwell.

Ich schätze Stephen Frears als einen ausgezeichneten Regisseur. Auch hier hat er eine komplexe, psychologisch verzwickte Geschichte makellos in Szene gesetzt. Eingebettet in das Western Genre benutzt die Handlung zwar die alten Muster, spielt jedoch in den vierziger Jahren, als sich auch in den abgelegenen, ländlichen Gegenden der Vereinigten Staaten, hier in New Mexico, bereits Vieles verändert hatte. Pete, der die Geschichte erzählt, verbindet eine tiefe, schwärmerische Freundschaft mit Big Boy, und beide trauern der guten alten Zeit nach und versuchen, ein ursprüngliches Cowboyleben mit Rinderzucht und Viehtrieb aufrechtzuerhalten. Beide lieben dieselbe Frau, die verheiratete Mona, deren Mann Vorarbeiter bei einem Großrancher ist, der nach altem Klischee die Gegend beherrscht und die kleinen Rancher auszuheben versucht. Auch Big Boys jüngerer Bruder arbeitet für diesen Betrieb. Diese Konstellation bietet Stoff für viele Konflikte und handgreifliche Auseinandersetzungen, die schließlich zu einem Brudermord führen. Die treibende Kraft für die Entwicklung sind der zügellose Egoismus, die cholerische Aggressivität und das blindwütige Machogehabe Big Boys, dessen Herrschsucht und unsensiblen Übergriffe seinem Charakter ein schlechtes Zeugnis ausstellen. Verfolgt man den Film, möchte man nicht verstehen, wie Pete ihn so verehren und Mona ihn lieben konnte. Es hat natürlich etwas mit dem kollektiven Verständnis der US-Gesellschaft zu tun, wie sie sich männliches Verhalten vorstellt und wünscht. Diese bedingungslose Gewaltsamkeit durchzieht diese Gesellschaft bis heute, wie fast täglich den Nachrichten entnommen werden kann. Frears bemäntelt sie nicht, zeigt sie aber kritiklos. Angesichts der hier vorgeführten, allgemeinen, blinden Unbewusstheit der Akteure konnte nur ein Desaster aus den Vorgängen entstehen und in meinen Augen erhielt Big Boy, was er nur allzu klar verdiente. Bedauern und Mitgefühl verdient nur Josepha, berückend gespielt von der wunderschönen Penélope Cruz, die Pete aufrichtig liebt und mit reinem Gefühl und klugem Geist Wahrheit spricht, aber verschmäht leer ausgeht. Trotz ihrer zwielichtigen und wenig sympathischen Rolle ist auch die Arquette unbedingt sehenswert und ein optischer Genuss. Ein weiterer Film, der mich dankbar aufatmen lässt, dass mir erspart blieb, in "Gods Own Country" leben zu müssen.

Die 1998 von Regisseur Stephen Frears inszenierte US-Filmproduktion "Hi-Lo Country" erzählt die Geschichte der Freundschaft der beiden Rinderzüchter bzw. Cowboys Pete Calder (Billy Crudup) und "Big Boy" Matson (Woddy Harrelson) im Nachkriegs-New Mexico der zweiten 1940er-Hälfte.
Während Pete eher ein ruhiger und überlegter Typ ist, legt sich Big Boy, der keinem Streit aus dem Weg geht, mit Vorliebe mit dem verhassten neureichen Rinderbaron Jim Ed Love (Sam Elliot), der im Begriff ist das Rindergeschäft im weitem Umkreis an sich zu reißen, und dessen Angestellten an. Zusätzlicher, höchstbrandgefährlicher Zündstoff, auch für die Freundschaft zwischen Pete und Big Boy, bietet dabei Big Boys immer offener ausgelebten Affäre mit der leichtlebigen Mona (Patricia Arquette), der mit einem von Jim Eds Untergegebenen verheirateten Dorfschönheit, auf die allerdings auch Pete eine Auge geworfen hat obwohl er in der hispanischstämmigen Josepha (Penelope Cruz) eine vernünftigere Alternative hat.

Der Film glänzt mit schönen Landschaftsaufnahmen sowie einer "zeitgemäßen" Ausstattung , einer komplexen Liebesaffäre un vor allem einem letzten Aufflackern des alten Westens der kleinen Farmer, Rinderzüchter und Cowboys gegen den neuen des Großgrundbesitz und der durchrationalisierten Großunternehmungen.

Die schauspielerische Leistung ist der eher einfach gestrickten und raubeinigen Landbevölkerung angemessen und die zahlreichen, teils gewaltsam ausgetragenen, Konflikte werden realistisch dargestellt.

Als Extra ist der Trailer zum Film sowie zu einigen anderen interessanten Produktionen enthalten.
Ton- und Bildqualität sind nicht zu beanstanden.

Daher auch alle 5 Sterne für diesen ganz gelungenen Film von mir.

modernen Western, die man sich anschauen kann. Die interssanteste Person ist der Hauptdarsteller, der von seinem eigenen Bruder erschossen wird. Der Typ ist sympathisch, mutig, direkt und so weiter und bekommt die schönste Frau in dem Film ab. Sein bester Freund verliebt sich ausgerechnet in seine Freundin. Doch nach dem Tod des besten Freundes geht er dennoch leer aus. Wo die Liebe hinfällt. Den Film kann man sich mehrmals anschauen (trotz Penelope Cruz. an der sich nicht nur Almodovar festgebissen hat). Da die Penelope Cruz (sie besitzt einen Schauspieler-Namen, der wie Leonardo Di Capri-Eis klingt). nicht ständig auftritt, ist der Film nicht Penelope-lastig. Natürlich sieht diese Frau hübsch aus...
