Though perhaps a little uninspired, The Halcyon exercises well-worn period tropes with style, and its solid cast makes for watchable company.

lisa r This series is very good. World War II is the backdrop and the hotel is the setting. It is glamorous and interesting and very well done. Also tastefully done. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/20/23 Full Review tim o Wife and I really enjoyed watching this series, though came to it years after broadcast. Like most comment, it's really too bad it didn't get picked up for further seasons... And didn't have an oppurtunity to properly put a bow on it's plots. There were a lot of balls still in the air at the end of ep8. Pretty similar vibe to Downton Abby, should appeal to Eng & WW2-on-the-homefront history fans. Bonus: It's old enough actual effort was made to fit the obligatory 'updates' within the context, time and setting, without the modern attempts that blow you right out of a show's context, to smack you around with 'importance'. Good stuff. Wish there was more... Gabriel Tate Daily Telegraph (UK) The Halcyon was complete hokum, with reheated plots aplenty (love across the racial/sexual/class divide) and suspension of disbelief compulsory. But with a cast this good, none of it mattered too much. Dec 27, 2017 Full Review Lucy Mangan Guardian There are lots of characters, even more plot and everything so far is immensely enjoyable, especially if you finish off any prosecco left over from New Year's Eve as you go. Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Euan Ferguson Guardian Early signs... all point to this becoming another little ITV triumph, as long as the focus stays skewed even slightly towards the political than the upstairs/downstairs bedhopping. Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Matt Baylis Daily Express (UK) As well getting the classical references right, it also clearly ticks a lot of boxes on the Downton Abbey replacement checklist. Dec 27, 2017 Full Review Caroline Westbrook metro.co.uk Well the opening episode kicks off with a bang. Dec 27, 2017 Full Review Mark Sanderson The Arts Desk There isn't anything original about The Halcyon (apart from the excellent titles and theme music), but in spite of this it works. Perhaps it's the fairy dust. Dec 27, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews
