Pretty faithful to the movie, with some well-needed alterations.

As someone who's enjoyed the movie, despite the controversy of including caucasian focus just to draw in an American audience, I feel this is a good adaptation to the novel. There are some differences in sequences of events (for example, General Shao's and the fallen's funeral sequence occurs in a later time than it did in the film, whether this was to explain a plot hole in the movie or was written before the movie was edited I cannot say, but it makes more sense in the novel than in the film, narratively speaking). The character of William is also more fleshed out. I wish I could say the same for some of the commanders, as the Deer Corps Commander is just as vacant in the novel as he is in the movie (I'm certain he just disappears into the void at one point). Overall, good, easy read.

I enjoyed this book very much! I have seen the movie quite a few times and the book added still more detail I missed. I get so wrapped up in the action, I miss details that are nice to know. The book followed the movie, just with a lot more info.

先に翻訳版を購入しており、原書にも興味が湧きましたのでこちらも購入。ネイティブの方のレビューにもありますが、英語が不得手な私にもキンドルの辞書機能などのお力を借りて、十分に楽しめる読みやすい内容になっています。特に翻訳との微妙なニュアンスの違いが読み取れるのが良いです。翻訳ではどうしても訳者さんによるキャラクターづくりの影響力が強くなります。

本書の訳者さんも大変魅力的にキャラクターを描いてくださっておりましたが、個人的にところどころ、キャラクターが映画よりも我の強さを強調されすぎたような違和感を感じたセリフがあったのですが、原書を読んで意訳だったことに気がつきました。ほんの一言でも意味合いが大きく変わりますので、こういう発見を楽しむのもアリですね。

思い入れのあるキャラクターがあるかたは、原書にもトライすることをオススメします！
