The Great Gatsby lacks the charm and the nostalgia of musicals such as High Society, An American in Paris, and Singin’ in the Rain. Ehrlich claims Luhrmann is trying to reinvent the present, but it doesn’t feel like that way.

It's the 3rd version of the best-selling book by F. Scott Fitzgerald It's the summer of 1922 and Nick Carraway recalls his experience meeting Jay Gatsby talking to his psychiatrist He was pals with James and his wife Daisy Buchanan Nick became a stock broker after giving up being a writer James is a philanderer and Daisy begins a romantic affair with Gatsby himself Nick then falls into a world of gambling, deceit, and love Pretty stylish directed by Baz Luhrmann It looks great, colorful, and richly detailed Terrific collection of actors with Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Joel Edgerton It does suffer the heart of its source material and is overly long at 2 and a half hours Then again the book wasn't well-received when it was first published You can't repeat the past or can you?, you can reinvent yourself, sometimes we chase ghosts that aren't there anymore This serves as a study of the decadence of the 1920s era and seeing the irony of the American dream by using the poor to get by It's all about reinventing ourselves There truly is more flair in this version with a colorful cast of characters with some good themes and analogies The costumes, the camera techniques, the set designs, and the music stand out so much Even the billboard with the metaphorical 'skull of god' is here with the infamous eyes watching over the poor Luhrmann has no subtlety that's for sure yet this is still a story of class warfare and an exploration of a gilded false happiness even after 10 years

I am a fan of this book and I think the more modern version of this movie was really able to bring to the table the imagination of what the book intended. Leo was incredible for this character. Loved the soundtrack and the imagary of this movie was well done!

This might be a generous rating. I thought it had a few good moments, but it was overall a dumb story that was very Baz Luhrmann in a bad way. I would stay away from wasting your time on this one. Cary Mulligan is the best part for what it's worth.

Wow, I have never read the book but had heard good things about it. The mystery behind Jay Gatsby, the acting by Leonardo DiCaprio and Toby Maguire was great! The development of the story is amazing, it does a great job of developing interest and hooking you more and more as the movie goes on. I loved it so much!!

I think the movie is a really good, and detailed. The book and the movie are similar, but they also have some things that aren't alike. The movie has scenes that are not like the book, and they skip some important details. The book is narrated by Nick, but the movie is different. Yes, it is narrated by nick in the movie, but it also focuses more on Gatsby than nicks perspective. Jordan and Nicks relationship doesn't appear as often in the movie as it appears in the book. The movie shows Myrtle as beautiful, as the book says she is thicker and has less beauty in the face.
