This holds up as a pretty remarkable production featuring an appropriate dose of Buster’s physical humor without sacrificing the dramatics and advances of the otherwise genre spanning adventure.

Didn’t grip me like I wanted it to (westerns just aren’t for me, try as I might), but there is still so much about this that I enjoyed - I genuinely cannot believe that this was made! The technical mastery of the silent era is unparalleled; I understand of course why we’ve moved away from such trickery and opted for CGI, but there’s something about watching this train track explode and crumble into a million pieces that no computer could ever replicate.

    Buster KKKeaton.

Still, the grand scope and effort put into this outweighs the Marvel Movie Politics any day of the week.

Really impressive scale-up from his previous movies, going from short silly stories to a feature length silly retelling of historical events. That said, it loses a bit of pace, the laughs feel much more spread out compared to his shorter works (Reaaaally feels like it's stretching the chase formula at a few brief moments). Less funny doesn't mean unfunny though, The General is still a really great time with really impressive stunts and surprisingly pretty cinematography!

    FFO 2024 - #24

Its influence on the film industry/history isn't something I will think about when rating this, but I can at least see why it had that impact. Watching it on a big screen almost 100 years later was a great experience filled with laughter and no worries on my mind.
