Jim Gay loves his racing greyhound but, out of town, he finds a dog with a better chance to win. His friends bet on his dog while he bets against.
Let's just get this straight, the dog in question is not gay, instead it belongs to a family of Gays, by which I mean the family is called Gay, by which I mean the family's name is Gay. They are the Gays and the dog is the Gay's dog.
And the dog in question is a racing greyhound which, although successful never earns My Gay (Wilfred Pickles) any money because it's on odds on favourite.
So the story is all about some very dubious chicanery involving him trying to bluff everyone into backing it when the dog is sick so he can back another dog and make a packet.
Petula Clark is the Gay daughter, so whether you like it…
Jim Gay (Wilfred Pickles*) has a dog, but it's no ordinary dog; it's a greyhound that he races on the weekends. His wife sort of just goes along with it, humoring his hobby, more or less. But he's very much into this "hobby," allowing it to basically rule his life and relationships. When another local racing dog is discovered as being potentially better than Jim's, it will influence his strategy big time and cause a lot of resentment!
This was a really fun slice-of-life movie, the kind that's like a great palate-cleanser after so many westerns and such. It's full of good dry humor, fun characters, and the performances were strong. I've had this for a long time and I'm glad I finally got to it. I'll be happy to watch it again someday!
*anyone else think of Scrubs when they hear that name? ;)
Maurice Elvey directs this British comedy in which a miner who loves greyhound racing bets on a dog to win. Starring Wilfrid Pickles, Petula Clark and Megs Jenkins.
The story concerns a man who vicissitudes his bet on a racing dog and really annoys his kin when the fresh canine triumphs.
Wilfrid Pickles gives an OK performance in his role as Jim Gay, the miner who has success with gambling on greyhound racing, but not much luck on dogs, but this changes when the dog he bets to win does so. However, his relatives aren’t impressed.
Petula Clark as Sally, Megs Jenkins as Maggie, Harold Goodwin as Bert and Nuna Duvey as Minnie are all alright as the other members…
"Jim, you're a gay - you're a true blood gay!"
Pleasant English romantic comedy with Wilfred Pickles paying more attention to his racing greyhound than his wife. The cast is superior to the story but the characters are charming enough to carry the film.
