Quentin Tarantino is abandoning his plans to develop The Movie Critic. While previously intending for The Movie Critic to serve as his very last feature film, the famed director has apparently had a change of heart.

Per THR, Tarantino has officially scrapped The Movie Critic. The move comes ahead of the movie's expected production start of later this year. According to the new report, more details about the nixed project have also been revealed. It's said to have morphed into a spinoff of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by bringing back Brad Pitt's Cliff Booth character. While it's not known if it would have been a prequel or a sequel, the latter seems more likely, given the reports that The Movie Critic was planned to be set in 1977 California. It was reported that Pitt would star, but his role hadn't been revealed.

10 Details Quentin Tarantino Includes in All His Movies (& Why)
Quentin Tarantino has become one of cinema's most consistent and unique directors. But from Pulp Fiction to Kill Bill, there are many hidden details.

Reportedly, The Movie Critic would have shot for a single day in August 2024 to qualify for a California Tax Credit, and then complete production in 2025. However, there still was no studio officially attached to the project, and its production was not quite yet set in stone. As of now, it's unclear exactly why Tarantino chose to abandon The Movie Critic, but it's fair to presume that he's no longer feeling sold on having the film serve as his very last movie.

Quentin Tarantino Goes Back to the Drawing Board

In any case, it's back to the drawing board for Tarantino. It's not the first potential project he's washed his hands off as a potential swan song for his filmmaking career. He was at one point considering an R-rated Star Trek film to be made with Paramount, though those plans wound up fizzling out before any real progress could be made. Tarantino had also floated the idea of remaking Reservoir Dogs as his last movie, bringing his career full circle, though he ultimately decided against going down that avenue as well.
