      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Dinner's strong ensemble isn't enough to overcome a screenplay that merely skims the surface of its source material's wit and insight.

Patti E This seriously may be the worst movie I ever watched. Like everyone says, it just ends. Like they ran out of film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Carla S This film presents a thought-provoking paradox where the ostensibly elitist brother emerges as the more sensible character, while the observant brother, with whom the audience is inclined to sympathise, displays a jarring cognitive dissonance when faced with a moral dilemma. This narrative choice highlights a disconcerting truth about human nature: people are neither binary in their behaviors nor always conform to our idealised perceptions of them. Interestingly, "The Menu" attempted to mimic the tempo of this film years later, but it did so in a manner that was both hollow and absurd, and yet, paradoxically, it has garnered much affection. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review Bryan G If you have 2 hours you don't care about, this is your film. This movie is like a stew of mixed plots and timelines that is served luke warm. Great cast, horrible movies. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/05/23 Full Review Jason D I hope that I never meet anyone who enjoyed this movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/28/23 Full Review Jelisije J A movie that deals with parents in high positions of power in politics dealing with trying to save their children from the mistakes they made. Very engaging no action just real crispy realistic dialogue. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/23 Full Review Louis G Absolutely asinine ending is all I can say. Other than some redeemable acting this flick falls well short keeping one interested Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Tara Brady Irish Times Steve Coogan has seldom been better or sourer as the irascible Paul. Rated: 3/5 Dec 11, 2017 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) An absolutely first-rate cast is cut adrift in a sea of laboured, overwritten dialogue in this disappointing drama. Rated: 2/5 Dec 10, 2017 Full Review Ed Potton Times (UK) You can see where this is heading, but it just doesn't work, and most of that, sadly, is down to Coogan. Rated: 2/5 Dec 8, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Compressing layers of familial discontent and rancor thinly-masked by the repulsive worst of white privilege, the tightly-wound urgency and shattering purpose of this titular meeting reveals itself over the film’s two hours. Rated: 2/5 Apr 7, 2024 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Gifted with a terrific ensemble cast all at the top of their game here. Rated: 3.5/4.0 Sep 6, 2020 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review The resulting film and the characters are all patchwork versions of real life and people. Nothing about this film feels genuine. May 6, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
