Critics Consensus

A rare film that surpasses the quality of its source novel, this Devil is a witty expose of New York's fashion scene, with Meryl Streep in top form and Anne Hathaway more than holding her own.

Deborah Ross The Spectator It's Meryl's movie, everyone says, and in a way it is. She gives a furiously funny performance as a furiously nasty bit of work... But, as I said earlier, scenes without her suffer horribly. Aug 22, 2018 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader An agreeably shallow comedy. May 27, 2008 Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Makes one pine for any comparable '50s working-girl comedy (or, for that matter, 1988's Working Girl). Rated: C Jan 11, 2007 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies When you think of the final years of Fox before the Disney acquisition, The Devil Wears Prada is one of the standout films--they don't make them like they used to. Rated: 5/5 Jun 30, 2021 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com If looks can truly kill, Meryl Streep's Miranda may very well be the fashion industry's most notorious serial killer. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 6, 2020 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) This one goes out to anyone suffering the whims of a tyrannical employer. For you, this will be so much more than a fun, fashion-conscious comedy. It will be therapy. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 11, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Nick R The story in 'The Devil Wears Prada' is great despite being a bit paint-by-numbers at times. Everyone does a great job in it, but Meryl Streep steals the show obviously. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Audience Member How can you not enjoy this film? It’s got something for everyone. The ending is also unforgettable. It’s just so satisfying. The performances are top notch. It’s got romance, humour, disappointment. I’m not a massive fan of Meryl Streep but she certainly delivers here and in my opinion this is one of her finest. Not a lot of actors could have pulled it off as well. I’ve seen this film a few times now and I enjoy it as much as watching it the first time. I loved it so much. Rotten tomatoes can be a tad misleading in my opinion. A film can get not such good ratings here but excellent ratings elsewhere. I also don’t agree with a lot of it either. It’s like people always want to critique something that’s good or praise something that’s not so good. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Scott M Insanely good story about a girls first job right out of college. Yes it's also about the fashion industry, but that's not the whole movie. Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt carry the film. Both portray hateful bi%#hes and do an amazing job. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Andrea C So fun - I can watch this on repeat. Wonderful characters. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review TripleStryke B This is a great film. I have a couple doubts about some things that happen so realistically I'd rate it like a 9.5/10, but its a very well executed film and I enjoyed watching it a lot.
