One of the most exciting new sagas in epic fantasy, The Demon Cycle became a phenomenon with readers and launched the brilliant career of New York Times bestselling author Peter V. Brett. Now start from the beginning with all five novels in one convenient ebook THE WARDED MAN THE DESERT SPEAR THE DAYLIGHT WAR THE SKULL THRONETHE CORE As darkness falls after sunset, the corelings rise—demons who possess supernatural powers and burn with a consuming hatred of humanity. For hundreds of years the demons have terrorized the night, slowly culling the human herd that shelters behind magical wards—symbols of power whose origins are lost in myth and whose protection is terrifyingly fragile. It was not always this way. Once, men and women battled the corelings on equal terms, but those days are gone. Night by night the demons grow stronger, while human numbers dwindle under their relentless assault. Now, with hope for the future fading, three young survivors of vicious demon attacks will do the unthinkable, stepping beyond the crumbling safety of the wards to risk everything in a desperate quest to regain the secrets of the past. Arlen Bales will pay any price, embrace any sacrifice, for freedom, and his grim journey will take him beyond the bounds of human power. Crippled by the demons that killed his parents, Rojer Inn seeks solace in music, only to discover that his instrument can be a weapon as well as a refuge. Wanting to cure the sick and injured, Leesha Paper overcomes great hardship to become a guardian of old world science, learning that what heals can also harm. Together, they will stand against the night.“Inspired, compelling, [The Demon Cycle is] the most significant and cinematic fantasy epic since The Lord of the Rings.”—Paul W. S. Anderson, director of Alien vs. Predator

Great Story but slow going at times

All in all a great epic fantasy series. At times the going is a bit slow, but the storylines of the different main characters are all interesting and unique.

Even while the ending feels a bit rushed it is rewarding and the premise set for further novels based on the children of the hero’s of The Demon Cycle.

20% great, 20% meh, 60% trash

The first book was amazing. The author immediately three out everything good with the beginning of the second book. The full story was a chore to read by the third book and stayed that way. The characters went from nuanced to an annoying army of Mary Sues, incapable of fear or weakness. I got sick of reading how everyone "moved almost to quick to see." After book one, the demons became inept. The author should have just written the erotica he wanted. Probably 50% of the series is dedicated to rape and hookups, none truly necessary to move the plot forward. I wasted my time with this series.

I went through the 5 book series fast so that means I mostly liked it. I liked the idea of this dystopian world where a hero becomes very powerful via his ingenuity and courage. But there was plenty that I did not like.
1. The action scenes became pretty repetitive. One long scene after another describing the action of killing hundreds of demons. Chopping heads off, ducking blows, etc. 5 books worth eventually gets tedious.
2. The antagonists are very simplistic. Mindless demons and then "mind demons" who frankly are actually quite stupid. Very two dimensional evil just for evil's sake. It's not interesting.
3. Ultimately as I finish the book I don't look back on it fondly. There is no part of me that would ever want to "escape" to this world. I definitely would never reread it. There is no nuance hiding that would benefit from a reread.
4. The Eunuchs were a bit too nasty. Somewhat comically so but ultimately just a bit too dark. Yes you need adversity. Sometimes murder, rape and torture really work in fantasy fiction. But a group that cuts everyones' penis and testicles off and then they're apparently all peeing themselves and agreeing to do the same to others, while also chopping off noses, torturing, etc... Meh. Why are they doing this again...??
5. Rojer using music to kill, etc demons was pretty silly.
6. The Krasians... I don't mind that they're clearly middle eastern and treat women terribly. I think it's perfectly worth examining this issue. The fact that it's quite similar in real life only makes it more relevant. But ultimately these Krasians are so dislikable and we spend sooo much time seeing things from their point of view. I do wonder if a shorter book without so much time from Ahmann and Abban's viewpoint might have been better.

I think my opinion of this series started going downhill in book four. It's tough writing a long fantasy series. Brett has done better than me.

Another series I feel I missed out on reading in middle school. The premise is fun, interesting, and impossible to ignore. I couldn't put the book down if I tried. The main character is one I doubt I'll be forgetting anytime soon, and the antagonist, as well as most of the story, will have a similar place in my mind. My only regret is not finding the books sooner

Enjoyably different

I loved the first book, and the other’s kept me entertained. The characters are great and development was fulfilling. Some oddities but the differences in cultures and customs was delightful and realistic

Such an underrated series that I've never heard anyone really talk about. My wife and I just love this series, with a very unique magic system as well as the core enemies. A definite must read for all fantasy lovers!

One of the best fantasy series I've ever read. Brett creates an amazing world, rich with different cultures and languages. He does not avoid having his characters fall, and sometimes it gets very dark. It goes opposite to the saying "the higher they are, they harder they fall"; the lower they are, the greater the rise. All his characters have beautiful arcs, and I enjoyed reading from the perspective of secondary and antagonist characters.
