What a dark film, it's like it been filmed with one of 50's night filter lenses permanently attached. Be prepared to turn your Brightness up to 100.
Amazon's blurb is pretty sneaky too:
"At night, "The Mangler" stalks the streets of Los Angeles, killing and mutilating random victims. A TV reporter, the father of one of the victims, and a police detective set out in search of the killer, but must turn to a mysterious psychic for help when they stumble upon the realization that they are dealing with something not of their world."
The TV reporter and father do hookup in that sense, but as written the four of them do not team up to track down the big bad. The police detective actually hates the father and TV reporter and the psychic was sadly under used.
The good: we have the indefatigable Richard Jaeckel in a main role, with Keenan Wynn picking up the slack. Casey Kasem, although billed as a main star on the movie poster, only has a handful of lines in a very short scene. He delivers his lines like the classic William Shatner and then disappears (actually he's run off by an annoying police capt.)
The final battle initially was in the 4 star range, cause you don't see the police reacting that way anymore (reminded me of a few of the Night Stalker episodes), but the big bad's ultimate demise is laughable (I actually snorted when it happend) and I'm wondering if they intended it to be that...um, quick. Just watch, you'll see lol.
Speaking of the big bad, get ready for some late 70's Battlestar Galactica cylon pulse laser action!
However, the main question IS, was that really William Devane's real hair?! It's the very definition of a 'mane', lol.
2 stars. It's worth seeing at least once.
