Product Description
The Current War: The Director's Cut is the epic story of the cutthroat competition that literally lit up the modern world. Benedict Cumberbatch is Thomas Edison, the celebrity inventor on the verge of bringing electricity to Manhattan with his new DC technology. On the eve of triumph, his plans are upended by charismatic businessman George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon), who believes he and his partner, Nikolai Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), have a superior idea for how to rapidly electrify America: with AC current. As Edison and Westinghouse grapple for who will power the nation, they spark one of the first and greatest corporate feuds in American history.

The character of Thomas Edison is given the most attention, and it the most multi-layered character in the film. He professes to be concerned about human exploitation, but to prove Westington AC as dangerous, he negotiates to use it to execute a criminal. This he hopes will prove it dangerous to humans. Westinghouse also resorts to nefarious methods to discredit Edison. Nikola Tesla does not enter the film until later on. He is shown briefly as a dissatisfied employee of Edison’s. Later he works with Westinghouse to prove the validity of AC generated power. Eventually, Westinghouse and Tesla win the nation over at the Chicago world’s fair lighting exhibition.
One of the criticisms I have heard about Current Wars is that the characters and storyline are underdeveloped. I think this is not entirely fair because the frantic camera work and visual sometimes overwhelm the characters. The film seems to be more interested in the technology. It is not surprising then the recreation of the Edison and Westinghouse facility is impeccable. The recreation of the Chicago world’s fair is nearly perfect.
Throughout the film, the director has used just about every camera angle and lens filter available. This cinematic approach gives the film a larger than life feel, which makes sense since the characters in the film are also larger than life.
If you are looking for an interesting movie though, check this one out. The actors all do a wonderful job and there were a few tidbits of information I knew nothing about, it's also suitable for a family....no real language to have to worry about.

In comparison the picture on the british disc is way brighter, way too bright in my opinion. No more blacks, just greys.
If you're interested in the director's cut: the disc by Leonine comes with german AND english sound (but no english subtitles, just german ones).
Good film by the way, much better than I thought it would be.
It is true that the Brits were very reluctant to accept Polish soldiers and their families after the war, and did not invite the Polish veterans to their Victory Parade for fear of upsetting Stalin. Ironically, Stalin did invite members of the First and Second Polish Armies which from 1943 fought alongside the Red Army all the way to Berlin and Dresden, to his Moscow Victory Parade. Even today relations are not that good between Poles and the Brits irrespective of what the leaders countries say.
As an Australian son of a late Polish WW11 veteran father, I believe movies like this one are important as to this day Poles felt very betrayed by their allies after the Yalta Agreement. It is also sad to hear that one reason for Brexit was a dislike of Polish people.
