Then, of course, she employs movie logic and keeps the egg hidden from her boss who just fired her, instead of telling him and perhaps saving her job. Maybe the "creature" messed with her mind originally to make her do it I suppose because, in the beginning, she had no reason to go along with all this.
She takes it home, and in-between moments of domestic bliss with her boyfriend Matt and her sister Ella who couldn't possibly be there for the reason you think she is, figures out what it eats and I have no reason to tell you what that is, you already know. It also squirts her in the face with ink which establishes some sort of psychic bond with it, causing her to slowly lose her mind and gives the plot a more solid reason than just that her boss was really rude to her face to do these things. Then the thing gets going with escalating violence and madness, including a really uncomfortable "nursing" scene...
I'm being snarky but I had fun with this after it gets past the slow setup. All the characters were likable, save for the already mentioned rude Dr. Fletcher. The main actress playing Olive especially just kills the role, and she even gets nude for some reason, which I don't mean in a disrespectful way, more like why are you showing the goods for an extremely low budget movie kind of way. Even if you don't like the movie, fine whatever, there's no way you won't recognize her great performance.
So yes, this movie is Lovecraftian. He even gets his Call of Cthulu lines quoted in here. It hits all the expected story beats and does it quite well, so you'll know whats coming when you get into the flow of the movie, or if you're not familiar with Lovecraft you will then just be really confused I guess, which is also fitting.
This is also why the low budget practical effects work so well here... They just make the icky slime tentacle monsters look even grosser and more odd-looking. Some of the reviews are going on as if this is some poorly shot and done high school level thing. Yeah right! This looks as good as you can expect for the budget, they did a great job. I only have one issue and that's with the sound, the voices are often low and there is a repetitive thump-thump noise played over and over in the background and it got on my nerves a bit. The main character is supposed to be going mad, not me!
In the end, just a well-acted and fun Lovecraftian film once it gets going and if you are OK with low budgets and an uneven pace at times you should enjoy it.
Perhaps this effort should have been called, "The Creature FROM Below," since only the first scene takes place where Great Cthulhu "lies sleeping." Definitely influenced by Lovecraft's tales, the film contains a giant octopoidal monster, an egg containing its blood-thirsty offspring, a diploma from "Miskatonic University," a mental link between human and Other, madness, murder, human sacrifices, a decent amount of blood and gore, and even more madness. The actors played their roles fairly well; the lighting, editing and music are generally adequate, and the director did an amazing job with such a small budget. Overall, this enjoyable thriller moves pretty well, and the conclusion is one that I am certain Lovecraft would be pleased with.
This is a slow, almost predictable horror movie formula. It does however have many Lovecraftian elements.
Characters in H. P. Lovecraft's writings rarely had happy endings. Love virtually never saved the day. The heavens did not part for the Christian God to intervene. Once characters in his world who learned what lived in the shadows and beyond they were forever marked and hunted, killed, or gifted with insanity when their mind shattered. In a rare few stories extraordinary people had gathered together in secret to form societies dedicated to keep the horrors from our world, this is not one of those stories.
So, what are some perks. Olive gets naked and occasionally shows more than a hint of breasts, for the more prudish these scenes don't show her 'creature below'. True to H. P. L. the story does not always follow Hollywood twists. Gallons of fake blood. A play on parasitic creature tactics where a targets mind is hijacked. A decent air of menace whenever the creature is about.
Drawbacks are many but tolerable. Including but not limited too slow pace. Taking the camera away from monsters feeding. Obviously low budget. Too much rambling pointless dialog. Some fairly big plot holes.
I would have tabbed out if I didn't have a tablet handy, even with frequent and sometimes long breaks in attention the story was easy to follow.
For all the horror fans that love the naked peep show, beyond a few seconds its really not there. For all the gorehounds, while there is a load of fake blood most of the ultra violence or feeding is implied.
