I wasn't completely sold on the execution of this but the concept was strong enough to carry it through some rough patches. Amanda Pays plays a girl who goes on a trip to East Germany with her estranged father (George Segal) where they stay in a hotel that was once residential. There, she starts to experience the life of a girl who lived there during WWII, finding a Jewish man hiding in a disused cold room for a butcher shop behind her wall and falling in love with him. The past story fades in and out of the present and you never know when she is living her present life and when she has been possessed by the girl from the past, and it causes some extreme instances of dislocation. It can get confusing and it isn't always dealt with realistically but it's still fascinating and an admirable high-concept for a film.
I didn’t buy this movies initial setup. Dad takes daughter to East Berlin to get reacquainted during the summer. Dad is more interested in spending time with his East German girlfriend and neglects his daughter much of the time. Daughter has some sort of mental breakdown and dad doesn’t respond how a dad should. So who goes to East Berlin for rest and relaxation and to get reacquainted with a loved one? Better vacation spots would of been, like Switzerland, Italy, or the south of France.
Otherwise the story concept was pretty good and it was executed fairly well for the most part. But there was something amiss with the screenplay or editing, because the story didn’t always flow well.…
It was cool to see Amanda Pays (from Max Headroom and The Flash fame) in her prime and acting alongside classic star George Segal as well. The two have conflicting chemistry and the idea of the film is simple... a girl goes to Europe to stay with her estranged father for a few days... until she finds out she has an unwelcoming alter ego.
