The story is kind of all over the place and doesn't really make sense. Like the mom is set up to be kind of the villain but then isn't, the kids that are mean then suddenly turn nice for no reason, she likes Christmas because it means the house is cleaned but then doesn't really elaborate further. It was hard for my 4-year old to understand so I filled in the gaps while reading. The writing itself doesn't flow really well, it was hard to read.
Would not recommend this book at all.
The pictures are beautiful but the story doesn't make sense and is overly wordy. Would not recommend this book or buy it as a gift again.
Second, this is a book with no logic. There is no reason why her mom cannot speak, why the bird has 2 faces, why the comb is evil.
After reading this, I kinda try to understand the whole story behind it:
Little Mariah’s died many years ago so she did not remember or maybe never heard of how her mom talked. She imagined her mom with the picture hanging up the piano. Because she likes singing, so she imagined that her mom sang instead of talk.
She died after the rich kids destroyed her home. She died in the cold weather. At the moment she died, she saw all the people who bullied her became good elves and they sang joyful songs for her.
Overall, this is the saddest story I have ever read for my children and I will never read this again. It is too sad for kids.

If I could, I’d give this book no stars but for the great illustrations, I am happy to give at least one.
The book starts off with this super weird letter to herself which, if you’re a fan, you know is authentically to her little self. I was OK with the All I Want for Christmas movie being part of her inner child healing but the letter in this book is just too much. It doesn’t even fit in the story.
Then there’s the story.
The story reads like a Christmas horror film for children. I absolutely regret not reading it before I started reading it with my daughter (5yo). She was into the storyline per se but it was way too scary without enough to balance it - and definitely not enough to balance it interestingly or sensically. The whole storyline is depressing and random, and reads more like a terrifying dream of odd random events.
Then there’s the writing quality. I want to believe that the publication was rushed but the illustrations are magnificent so that certainly couldn’t have been the case.
Any hardcore Mariah fan has great pride in her writing her own music lyrics but man, she just really missed the mark here. Like I mentioned above, the storyline is incredibly bizarre and too scary in my opinion. But then there’s the actual text: it’s basically just a long list of negative adjectives in every single sentence. Sometimes it rhymes, sometimes it doesn’t. And the word choices were just completely off. For example, I found myself nearly gasping when the word “sucks” was in there and I changed it quickly in the moment when read aloud. If she wants to write such storylines and use such words, set your eyes on a book for adolescents but this is too much for children.
I will never read this story to my child again, I will be returning it, and I hope that Mariah stops doing everything except her Christmas concerts so freaking rushed and lazy. You have enough money to hire the greatest manager and PR manager. Use it! You are the GOAT but please don’t spoil your reputation with small crap like this.
(Guess I needed to vent.)
