Watched this for the first time in a few years because I'm drafting Con Artist movies on an episode of the Screen Drafts podcast tonight, and I remembered loving this movie but didn't wanna assert it until I'd refreshed my memory. Memory refreshed! I love it.
I've (embarrassingly) made no secret of how much I dig Johnson's whole deal, and this is maybe his most fun movie? I'd only really remembered the ending and Rachel Weisz's great hobbies montage in the beginning, but the shots are so kinetic, it's beautifully delicate at all the right points, it's loaded with great sight gags, and it's such a well-woven series of set-up/payoff gotchas that I just find myself repeatedly giggling through it…

yes i did just watch this like 9 days ago, but i set it as the first film on a month-long list of movies i scheduled for my friend to watch in august and when i said “i’d be down to watch any of these with you over facetime” she immediately called my bluff. having had 9 days to reflect before a third viewing, i would say that this is still a good movie
There is a montage in this film that is just Rachel Weisz being very cool. She juggles chainsaws in it. That makes this Rian Johnson's best film.

Director Rian Johnson inhabits a world I very much want to live in. With Brick he created a fascinating take on the noir genre and with the Brothers Bloom he managed to spin one of the best grifter yarns ever. What do they have in common? They're completely off the beaten path and so quirky it is almost impossible not to be sucked in by them into the universe they create.
The Brothers Bloom is essentially a film about conmen. These have been done before, but never like this. There is wonderful, light-hearted comedy, startling intense drama and an overall off-key tone that makes you feel as if you're watching someone else's dream.

With Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery fast approaching, I found myself baffled that though I had seen The Brothers Bloom (in theatres, mind you), I hadn't ever logged Rian Johnson's second film on here in any capacity and I'm appropriately ashamed of myself as a result.
I will not lie in saying that I'm an unabashed fan of Johnson and have loved every single film of his (yes, even that particular legacy sequel). Though I'd argue that Looper is the smartest of all of his films, I would say this is his most purely enjoyable with what it's working with and working towards. Certainly it's not news that Johnson's movies are often too clever by half, but for me this one totally escaped him and hits an almost instantly irritating wavelength, Wes Anderson scratching a chalkboard. I've seen it three times now but have never gotten through it in one sitting.

Okay, so not gonna lie, I was planning on opening with what I thought would be an unpopular opinion; but it seems like its everything but. Many can't pinpoint the issue that doesn't allow them to click with the film, but for me its clear: style.
See, as filmmakers we are prone to borrow or become highly influenced by the particular trademarks of a director, especially those that have become highly influenced in the world of cinema.
