Just got my 8 disc monster edition of Broadsword and the Beast and is my 9th one so far (5 to go!!) And like the other ones is nothing short of spectacular!! Cds that sound perfect ,dvd audio, dvd video, and the book portion covers everything one could imagine, and in this book format doesn't take as much space as those bigger box sets,(but I still love those as well),and the alternate versions are solid and "stand up" on there own, live stuff spectacular as well. You can hear and see that all of this was not 1/2 @$$ ,would like to see 2nd pressings Stand Up,Warchild,Passion Play, Too Old to Rock and Roll.... and heavy horses,I can't imagine paying 300 to 800 for each for these and will hope a 2nd or 3rd pressing will materialize

There are two people in this world. Those who love the music of Jethro Tull and respect the complicated intricacies that the band delivers on a high level. Then there are the others... straight savages. We don't like straight savages.

The audio quality is practically worth the price in and of itself - at least for fans of this music. Clear, rich, and precise. AFter 40 years, we can finally listen to the genius of Anderson and company without whatever audio restrictions kept the original from sounding even remotely as good as it could have. I know it's cliche, but listening to this Steven Wilson remix is like hearing these songs for the very first time, and IT IS GOOD.

I haven't even seen or heard the other discs or digested what's on the beautiful glossy pages yet, but am comfortable giving it 5 stars already. (One reviewer took a star off for the difficult disc removal from the package - and it does suck (I almost broke a disc) - but the content is too precious and well-made to penalize it for something irrelevant by comparison).

I had the vinyl for years, and when I finally got the CD some years later, I was disappointed that it didn't sound as amazing as, well, this version. Mr. Wilson is truly a talented man, and his work on remaking the audio quality in these Jethro Tull packages is little short of genius.

More to come once I go thru all the content, which, like Tull concerts, is a bargain for what you pay.

For years my Jethro Tull experience stopped with "A". When I did finally pick up "Broadsword", I found it a solid return to form.

To answer a criticism of this set and it's cost-it's got 3 DVDs and 5 CDs and, for that price, compared to the other sets, it's affordable. That runs to around $11 for 5 discs of previously unreleased music and video. No one is forcing anyone to buy this set.

Those critical of the cost fail to take into account that this set features five CDs and three DVDs. It’s an exhaustive look at the album.

This deluxe reissue is filled to the brim with music; five CDs and three DVDs of material. The first three CDs are the album proper, demos and master mixes along with "associated recordings". Steve Wilson has remixed the original album in stereo and in 5.1 for the DVD with two DVDs of live performances.

The hefty book portion has plenty of comments from Ian, Martin and Dave as well as their two "new" (at the time) members.

My only complain is with the CD holders; the first time I tried to get them out I broke one of the plastic holders. While I admire the idea for the design (with three discs on the reverse side of the hard covers), the execution is a bit underwhelming. I would have designed these a bit differently for the packaging. If you are going to take these in and out of the book often, I would suggest putting them in CD cases to reduce the chance of damage to the discs and to the plastic holders in the book itself.

I am a huge Tull Ian Anderson fan. The man in one year puts out more material than Pink Floyd did in their entire career.
The music is great but there is a huge flaw in the packaging. To remove each cd you have to pull and pry from the bizarre plastic holders that at first had me nearly cracking the discs in frustration to remove them. You finally see the little fragile arms under each disc about 1/2 an inch each that you can wiggle the discs free but immediately I cracked one of these arms because THEY ARE RIDICULOUS. Why not just the center circles to plug each disc onto like all the other Tull box sets??? Just abysmal thinking on some executive trying to change the game of securing cds to the box. Such a drag. And so easy to crack a disc if your not careful. And at 79.00 I am very disappointed.
The libretto and Steven Wilson mixes are their usual high standard although a lot of the unreleased material sounds very similar. Its a lovely box set ruined by very faulty cd holders. Amen

I saw some of the negative reviews of this latest JT box set; primarily regarding the price. Having all of these sets in my collection, I was initially questioning the higher price of this one. But with eight discs and a very lengthy book, it’s certainly understandable.

I received it on 1 September and started listening to today. In fact, I have the first CD on the stereo now. The sound quality is amazing for an early 80’s recording and I forgot just how good this JT album is since I haven’t heard it for a long time.

For now, I rate it five stars based on what I hear this far. If any part of it is not worthy to have been included in this set, I’ll revise my review. It’s yet another outstanding release in the JT catalog and I’m looking forward to the rest; especially Crest of a Knave!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price!

The one thing that I've always admired about Jethro Tull is the strength of the unreleased material. As various packages have come out over the years which have included the "associated recordings" I have often thought that there are unreleased songs that are better than some of the ones that got released on the studio albums. This package contains two cd's worth of unreleased tracks, many of which are fantastic and worth the price of the collection alone. There's also plenty of songs that have never been released before on other packages. Some of Martin Barre's best guitarwork is in the demos and we're getting to hear it for the first time here. Me, Dinosaur has such fantastic guitar it should have been released. The main complaint about the packaging is the difficulty in getting the cd's out of the tray. However, once you discover that pushing the cd's against the spring tabs let's the top come out from behind the retaining points it's not so bad.
