      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It's certainly uneven, and many viewers will find that its reach exceeds its grasp, but The Book of Eli finds the Hughes brothers injecting some fresh stylish fun into the kind of post-apocalyptic wasteland filmgoers have seen more than enough of lately.

Curtis D This movie is awesome and to see critics nail it here is disappointing. It's a great story, fantastic acting by Denzel, action, and has a twist you don't see coming. Watch it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/24 Full Review Nathan W Denzel's performance is incredible. The plot is intriguing. This is a textbook example of a perfect twist. A must see film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/06/24 Full Review Blaydin B An amazing movie on a post apocalyptic wasteland, definitely better than any other movie about such that I've ever seen! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review Kiss K the movie might've been an above average film for its time, driven by Denzel Washington's compelling performance. While Washington excelled in his role, the movie's desolate wasteland aesthetic felt overdone. However, the film's strength lies in its gripping plot twist at the end, although the side character's decision to return lacks clear justification. Despite its flaws, The Book of Eli remains a memorable and thought-provoking, anchored by Washington's powerhouse acting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review Victoria P One of the best films. I literally love it. The meaning, the actors, how it is filmed, are all exemplary. Could watch it again and again . Ed Koch The Atlantic This picture is one big waste of time, including that of the actors and those in the audience who pay to see it. Jan 16, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online The Book Of Eli is just one hot mess with choppy biblical undertones... The filmmakers just tried to get too deep with something that was not fully developed. Rated: D+ Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association Post-apocalypse films are a dime a dozen, so what makes The Book of Eli so different? Not much, except an evangelical subplot that is not strong enough to be this film's savior. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 8, 2016 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The most admirable aspect of the production is its use of Washington in a samurai-esque role.
