Although often referred to as a "Carry On film in all but name", due mainly no doubt to the familiar Carry On production team that includes director Gerald Thomas and producer Peter Rogers, and of course Carry On regulars Sid James, Joan Sims and Jim Dale, I reckon this comedy deserves to be judged on it's own merits.
For those like me who know this movie word for word, the important question is probably: whats the picture and sound quality like? well the answer is both are good. This Optimum release offers a 1.78:1 widescreen picture, there are no extras or subtitles.
For those who haven't yet seen the movie, here's a few details: Without a stream of saucy Carry On style double-entendres, the film tells the story of a gang of incompetant crooks led by George "The Great Brain" Brain (Sid James) and his two sidekicks, (played by Dick Emery and Lance Percival) with the lovely Sylvia Syms starring as George's infatuated girlfriend. Following a bungled bank robbery, George manages to dump the proceeds in a hollow tree which stands in a rural area before being arrested. After serving time for the robbery, the gang return to the area to make an horrifying discovery: a town now occupies the area, and the tree is now situated in an unfortunately inaccessable place. Before embarking on a number of half-baked attempts to recover the money, the gang decide to rent rooms at the home of the widowed Mrs Gamely (Joan Sims) and her sexy daughter Sally (another reviewer has already waxed lyrical on the delights of Edina Ronay's derriere).
The situation becomes complicated by the discovery of an undesirable character living in the house, in the form of a gormless but diligent police constable (Jim Dale), Deryck Guyler is also good fun as the police sergeant who is more concerned with organising a police concert than solving crime. Some of the funniest scenes involve Joan Sims' amorous pursuit of the nervous Dick Emery.
Good performances all round help to make this 1965 black and white movie an enjoyable 85 minutes viewing, I find the characters endearingly charming and funny so I couldn't resist awarding it five stars.

In the 1960s our local cinema ran a continuous performance regime .
That means we could sit through several performances if the film was good ,and / or it was raining outside .
Back then , I found this film sooooo funny , I must have watched it about a dozen times .
Guess what , it still seems as funny now , despite the passing years .
Dare I say , even better than the corny " Carry On,s "
I wont go into the plot because it has already been mentioned , and it would ruin the element of surprise .
However , if , like me , you prefer comedy WITHOUT Bs , Fs and Cs , then this is a film I can honestly say you will enjoy .

Not bad. I love the comedy crime caper genre of films, exemplified by classics such as "The Lavender Hill Mob" and "The League of Gentlemen." This film does not quite reach the heights of those, but it's entertaining, and enjoyable nevertheless.

Not the best DVD ever nether the less one that should be in the collection of British comedy.
Quite a funny film with some top British comedy actors but the plot is very thin and half way through I found myself getting a little bored with the whole thing.
I am pleased I bought it but it's not one to rush out to get.
