Pop culture's fascination with the psychically damaged has inspired a pantheon of cult heroes, from Brian Wilson through Sky Saxon, Roky Erickson, and Kurt Cobain, whose enduring--if troubling--appeal could give a cultural psychologist a life's worth of study. Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett has long been one of the most obsessed over. Listening to this first-ever distillation of the "best" of Barrett's brief post-Floyd recording career (which essentially ended in 1970), it's not hard to understand why. Barrett's childlike side (displayed here on such Lewis Carroll-esque fare as "Octopus," "Terrapin," and "Effervescing Rhino") and almost painfully innocent love songs sometimes feel like the lost blueprint of alt rock, while his space-case vocal delivery and distinctly surreal sense of timing and rhythm give each cut a hypnotic sense of intrigue. It's all a far cry from the intricately baroque pop psychedelia of his brief tenure in Pink Floyd. Something (LSD? Insanity? Both?) clearly shattered Barrett's consciousness between the band's debut album Piper at the Gates of Dawn (he left the band shortly afterward) and the spare, shattered acoustic ballad poems from his first solo album (The Madcap Laughs) featured here. The more accessible, pop-conscious ethos of its follow-up, Barrett (highlighted by "Baby Lemonade" and the amusing "Gigolo Aunt") were largely studio illusions conjured up by sidemen such as Floyd's David Gilmour and Richard Wright. Barrett fans should also note the presence here of the previously unreleased "Bob Dylan Blues," a wry, talking blues parody of the great Zimmerman and allegedly one of Barrett's earliest compositions. --Jerry McCulley

This collection is a well put together sampling of some of his best solo works. There are a few parts that are a bit of a hard listen, partly because of Syd's penchant for off-beat lyrics and dissonant sounds, but also because, if you listen closely, you'll hear those hints at the troubles that plagued Syd's life.
There is a dichotomy also; witness the gleeful trippiness of "Octopus": ("...they'll never put me in their bag")/ ("The squeaking door will always squeak...").
Somewhere among the word plays- deadpanned with amusing poetic license- I am certain Syd is trying so 'say something' in his own inimitable way.
Then there's the trance inducing "Opel", with the loooong held vocal notes ("I'm tryyyyyyyyyy-ing..."), which is just plain spooky, but I love it.
As other's have mentioned, buy it also for "Bob Dylan Blues" and "Two Of A Kind" even if you have the rest of his works. The latter has an early Donovan feel, and the former is a left-handed compliment to its namesake ("...and the wind, you can blow it"---nice).
These are two excellent songs which I'd never heard before, and enjoy immensly. There's a nice progression in the song order and selection. Bottom line, this is put together really well and is a fitting tribute to one of the greats.
RIP Syd, you are missed.
This is a rare collection of someone who did not care anymore about coming across as a 'rock star'. Beautiful songs, beautiful voice and gentle touching music. I am grateful Syd left this gift for us to enjoy.
I give this 1 Star instead of Zero Stars. Only because for some strange reason, Barrett decided to write a real song--Bob Dylan Blues--and though it remained unreleased until this compilation, it's the best tune here. It has an actual chord progression, sardonic lyrics, and should be covered by somebody with more than a $5.00 studio budget. Is it real or is it Memorex? I think it's Memorex--or somebody's cassette recorder.
The rest of this alleged cream of the Barrett corpus is Barrett's one BB ricocheting around in his head. He knew (more or less) how to fit in lyrics, and there's an occasional bar or two of interesting music (undoubtedly played by someone else). This isn't experimental music--these are songs by someone whose aesthetic is so wrapped up in his own mind that he doesn't know or care that he can't communicate anything to other human beings.
This can't be the worst music ever recorded--given the mountain of recorded music, there has to be material even worse. Had Barrett been a struggling musician who showed up at a studio with these songs, he'd never get near a fried tube. But his early membership in Pink Floyd gave him some credibility and enough fans to support releasing his creations. I'd rather listen to Alvin and the Chipmunks cover The Archies.
I'm sure this review is heresy to those who regard Barrett as a genius, but anyone expecting to hear how Pink Floyd would have sounded if Barrett had remained on board is in for disappointment.
