Never boring and endlessly unpredictable, this book is nothing like I expected it to be but a fascinating story all the same. Winter Renshaw always writes the most interesting love stories, and this one left me guessing from start to finish. It’s got a touch of magic, fate, destiny, deja vu… whatever you want to call it, it’s there. But at the heart is a slow burning love story that’s somber, kinda angsty, but also sweet. Personally, I found the second half to be a lot more successful than the first, but it held my attention the whole way through.

This is the kind of story that you’re going to want to go into blind, because there’s an element of mystery at play. Essentially, Cainan and Brie are strangers who meet at a bar one night. Chemistry sparks between them but they wind up going their separate ways. Soon after, Cainan is in an accident and he wakes up with memories of a family he doesn’t have, a wife he’s never met, and a life he doesn’t lead. He’s left feeling dissatisfied by the life he actually DOES have, and it’s not until he runs into Brie again that things start to click. The problem? She’s now engaged to his best friend, and the life Cainan wants is even further out of reach.

Renshaw’s books are always easy for me to devour in one sitting because they never go quite how I expect them to. The writing is solid, the characters are likable and interesting, and the romance burns slow but builds along the way. I don’t think this is her most successful work – check out The Cruelest Stranger if you haven’t yet – but I liked it a lot. I personally struggled with the length of time the wrong man was in the picture, and thought that both Cainan and Brie came off looking a little bad because of their encounters with him. Cainan’s probably TOO loyal of a friend, and Brie’s probably TOO much of a pushover, but once the book settled into the back half, I really enjoyed it. If you’re looking for a slow burn romance that’s got a unique feel, it’s definitely worth checking out. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC via the author (then purchased it for my collection) and am voluntarily leaving a review of this mysterious romance.

Cainan is a divorce lawyer who is close to two people in his life his sister Claire and his best friend Grant. Sexy, single and successful he can have any woman he wants but he prefers to keep his relationships brief and complication free.

Brie is a woman whose past has ensured that she always analyzes the situation before she acts which may have caused her to lose out on new experiences, but she believes that caution will suit her better in the long run.

When Cainan awakens from a devastating accident that resulted in a coma he awakens believing that he is married and has a family the only problem is that the woman in his dreams happens to be the woman who not only rescued him but has since become involved with Grant. Canan and Brie are drawn to each other by an invisible bond that their hearts can’t deny even though their heads say they should.

This is so much more than your ordinary boy meets girl and they have their happy ever after. It is a story about soulmates and how there is a greater force in play that in the end ensures what is supposed to happen does happen.

The Best Man is not a paranormal story, but it made my mind wonder.

A chance meeting between Cainan James and Brie White is just that. A few minutes in a bar. Cryptic conversation. A prophetic parting. They go back to their lives without even exchanging names.

A near-death car accident finds Cainan waking from a coma six months later, asking for his wife. The only problem is he isn’t married. He heals and returns to his law practice with the visions of the mystery lady in his head. Cainan’s sister, Claire, is convinced he’s still traumatized by the accident and wants him to get help. Cainan is ready to agree with her until he meets his mystery woman.

Engaged to his best friend, Grant.

As the story unfolds, nothing is what it appears to be. Analytical Brie and Pragmatic Cainan ignore the simmering connection between them for obvious reasons. Rethinking her decisions, Brie has to make choices that have nothing to do with Cainan, while all of Cainan’s decisions are because of Grant.

What happens when the couple realizes they may know each other better than either of them know Grant?

(Insert speeding car in parking to mow Grant down. Read the story. He deserves it.)

Engaging and bittersweet, The Best Man is about relationships and does a great job of delving into several, especially between siblings and friends. It also deals with misplaced loyalty, manipulations, and betrayals. But not where you think. Pay attention!

However, it shines brightest as the connection between Brie and Cainan is explored and explained. Well, as much as the unexplainable can be explained!

I enjoyed this read. It didn’t fall back on insta-love, broody males or females making bad decisions simply because. It focused on people, the part they play in our lives, and the consequences of life choices.

Or are they choices? If you hear the Twilight Zone theme… just go with it.

Ok here we go. If you're looking for a slow but fast book, then look no further. It's a very reading into signs, if you will. Almost expected for it to end with the way it starts. It's not bad just not my style, plus the constant typo of "thought" when it should be "though" is a little annoying. It's a decent book, one I wouldn't really recommend but also I wouldn't discourage you either. On to the next!

Another amazing read by Winter Renshaw. I always think she can’t get better but she does. This was such a heartfelt story of destiny and soul mates not just Cainan and Brie but also Brie and her twin Kari. It had a bit of a surreal feel to it that kept me entranced.

Cainan has an accident and wakes up having dreamed he was married with two kids. He knows everything about his wife and can’t believe when he wakes up that he is not married. It gets worse when he finally meets his best friend Grant’s fiancé and it’s his dream wife, Brie. The story has many layers and twists and turns keeping me thoroughly engaged as it unfolds.

Lots of interesting characters though Grant is such a douche that I just wanted to punch him.

I loved that Brie trusted herself rather than listened to her family and stuck to her guns with Grant.

This is an excellent read.
