Federico Veiroj se maneja siempre lo más cercano posible a "Muestra, no cuentes", sus películas son parecidas, más allá de su estética marcada, algo que siempre resalta es lo mucho que el director confía en el espectador, lo cuál es de admirar, siempre intenta plasmar la psicología de sus personajes visualmente, es complicado, esta probablemente sea su película más difícil de "digerir" o "procesar". Es complicada, es extraña, es ambiciosa, es muy Veiroj y me encanta. El Apostata es un estudio de personaje hipnotizante como todo lo que sale de la mente del director, exige compromiso, me rasco la cabeza pensando en todo lo que me quiere decir. Me pide a gritos un rewatch.
Que directorazo por dios.

I like the idea of this film much more than the execution. My main problem with the film was the protagonist was a bit of a dick.

Más allá del gancho argumental de "la aventura de apostatar en España", creo que esta película llega bastante hondo en la psique de aquellos que pertenecemos a las últimas generaciones de españoles que, con una probabilidad del 99%, tenemos una foto de primera comunión parecida al póster de la peli y hemos sido víctimas en mayor o menor grado del adoctrinamiento católico por vía directa.
Si eres español y estás en la treintena, debes verla.

Would pair well with Elle since both are character studies about cruel, self-destructive outsiders who desperately want more control over their lives. Main difference is that Veiroj's character wants to regress. His desire to defect is represented, rather than explained, by his mommy issues. He wants to defect but realizes that he is the one holding himself back. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy of frustrated self-actualization, though much of the film concerns the fierce selfishness and stubborn-ness required of any defector. Funny, well-observed, and sexy too.

The Apostate is an amusing, darkly humorous satire about a Spanish man's quest to have his baptism annulled with the Catholic Church. It intelligently raises issues regarding corruption within the church, while morally complicating things by making its protagonist somewhat unlikable. Andres Gertrudix performs well in the lead role, and the film has a pleasing sense of pacing, making efficient use of its 80 minutes.

ni comedia negra, ni drama existencial. no me la creo en ninguna de las dos facetas en las que intenta funcionar. tampoco me fío de la gente que viste tan mal y que pone tan poco la lavadora. puedo adivinar exactamente cómo huele ese piso. not cute.

CAPSULE REVIEW: By know, I've seen Federico Veiroj's complete full feature oeuvre - well it's three films and I'm not a fan of his fetishes or middle class obsessions. I would even go so far as to declare "El Apóstata", the most over-hyped needy movie from 2015. And it's boring too boot, indescribably boring. You have to immerse yourself in catholic lore in order to understand the "subtle satire", and I'm putting that one in quotes as it sounds pretentious as hell and unwarranted for yet another cynical art house movie from Veiroj. "El Apóstata" supposedly portrays the expected clash between the main character's will, i.e. to be an apostate and go through that arduous and bureaucratically challenging process and staying within the catholic church's auspices and keeping the few social connections he has. It's sounds as a conceptual wank-a-thon and it is exactly that. A conceptual wank-a-thon.

Gonazlo es un pretencioso mal logrado, bastante imbécil, difícil de empatizar y turbio por momentos, sin demasiado desarrollo.
El final, el cierre del proceso está bastante bien, pero es el desarrollo el que se queda corto, sobre todo para una idea tan interesante.
Leí por ahí que consideraban está película del estilo "show, don't tell" y me permito discrepar, tiene momentos tremendamente descriptivos del proceso del personaje, el desarrollo en ese sentido es bastante lienal. Hay cosas que podrían invitar a pensar que la trama es de corte show, don't tell pero más bien es porque esas cosas quedan sueltas o en el aire.
Hay algo en el estilo de Veiroj que me atrae, principalmente pensando en La vida útil,… -
