Frank Sinatra Film Casting Sparks Online Jokes and Memes

Martin Scorsese is reportedly hoping to make a Frank Sinatra biopic, which has resulted in numerous people online making fun of the potential casting.

The Oscar-winning director wants to cast Leonardo DiCaprio as the legendary singer and Jennifer Lawrence as his second wife, Ava Gardner, per Variety. DiCaprio last teamed up with Scorcese for 2023's Killers of the Flower Moon and the star and Lawrence previously appeared alongside each other in 2021's Don't Look Up.

The biopic could hit some roadblocks, as while it is reportedly drawing interest from major studios and streamers—with Sony being the front runner—Sinatra's daughter, Tina Sinatra, controls her father's estate and is yet to approve the film.

Regardless of these potential issues, many don't think the casting works, with people taking to X (formerly Twitter) to say DiCaprio and Lawrence don't look anything like Sinatra and Gardner.

Newsweek emailed spokespeople for Scorsese, DiCaprio and Lawrence for comment Thursday.

"I'm not really convinced by the casting, I don't see much similarities between Leo-Jennifer and Frank-Ava," one person commented.

"Leo as Sinatra, wrong, wrong and wrong. But what I find even more egregious is the idea that he thinks Jennifer Lawrence self could portray the exquisite beauty, charm and va va voom of Ava Gardner. Please. I'm insulted to the core," said another.

"As someone who's very attached to the material this film will focus on and especially with my personal adoration of Sinatra as a whole, this feels like one of those projects that won't come to fruition. DiCaprio & Lawrence despite being great actors are both terribly miscast," someone else wrote.

A fourth person added: "I'm sorry Marty but in no universe am I going to believe DiCaprio as FRANK SINATRA or J Law as Ava Gardner."

Others have gone as far as to joke that Ronan Farrow should be cast as the crooner. Despite Woody Allen being publicly named as Ronan Farrow's father, it has long been theorized that Ronan Farrow is actually the biological son of Sinatra.

Mia Farrow added fuel to the fire when, in 2013, she said Sinatra could "possibly" be the father of her son. Over the years many have noted the physical similarities between Ronan Farrow and Sinatra.

"Why Leonardo DiCaprio when Ronan Farrow is right there," one person wrote alongside a laugh-crying emoji.

"Come on do the hilarious thing and cast Ronan Farrow," said another.

"Bish why would you cast Leonardo DiCaprio just cast Ronan Farrow," someone else commented, sharing side-by-side photos of the two men.

Another person added: "Surely you'd cast Ronan Farrow as Frank."

Newsweek also emailed a spokesperson for Ronan Farrow for comment.

Not everyone is unimpressed with the movie idea or the casting, and some X users shared their support on the social media platform.

"A Frank Sinatra biopic directed by Martin Scorsese starring DiCaprio and JLaw? I've already signed up," a different X user wrote.

"If anyone can pull it off, Leo can," someone else said.

"A BLOCKBUSTER IS COMING," another added.

Gardner and Sinatra first met in 1943 and tied the knot in 1951 after leaving their previous partners. However, the relationship wasn't to last and they divorced in 1957.

As frequent collaborators in the film industry, DiCaprio has acted in six of Scorsese's feature films, including Gangs of New York, The Aviator and The Departed.
