Review of Shanghai Hotel
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 10, 2015
This hotel turned out to be better than I was expecting. The room was very nice, clean and a good variety of amenities. Breakfast was not what I was used to and you have to sit with other guests.
The bar is a NO GO area! Very expensive (coke is 38 yeun, if you go to the shop it only costs 4 yeun). Always girls asking if you would like massage with happy ending. They even stand around the elevator and you get this whatever time of the day. It gets very frustrating and they actually work for the hotel.
In the hotel entrance, there is a gentlemen selling fake watches. If you say no or brush him off, he will still follow you down the street persistently trying to sell.

This hotel, well, it is toooooooo old. My coworkers booked this hotel for me. The area and public traffic is good. It is cheap, clean I think. The room and the service is good, breakfast is common style.

I stayed here for three nights as part of a tour and was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is a little old and worn in parts but it is clean and housekeeping is good. My room was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was clean with no problems. Staff seemed helpful and friendly. The breakfast choice was excellent, better than most of the hotels we stopped at. The hotel is in a good location and even on our first day we managed to have a good walk round, even with the rather hair-raising roads. Wifi is available in the lobby areas but at the time I was there the chairs and sofas had all been removed for some reason. The only place to sit was the bar/cafe area. I would have no worries about staying here again and it made a great start to the holiday.

I'll start with the bad. It took me 4 hotel keys and 3 trips back to reception, and 45 minutes with the night manager before I saw a room. This is a very old hotel run by the Chinese government.

Once I was in a room, it was lovely. Nice furniture and linens, spacious bath, lots of dark wood and glass throughout the room. There was even a gas mask in the closet to use in case of fire! WIFI was good in the lobby but I could find no WIFI for room.

Breakfast was ok, but not great.

The location is in a very busy area of Shanghai, safe at night, and lots of stores and restaurants. I was traveling solo so I opted to have dinner in the hotel. BIG MISTAKE trying the Japanese Restaurant. Terrible food and service, and high prices. I also tried the lobby bar and found no one who spoke English. I finally pointed to menu and ordered but they would not allow me to take the glass to my room.

This hotel was reminiscent of the cold war era soviet style. The elevators were ancient. The rooms were ancient. The girls who approach you prior to getting to our elevator are pushy and ancient. It was cheap and the only one that had availability in the area. Stayed for business but met most of my clients at the Hyatt around the block. It was kind of cool to see what old soviet influenced China looked like.

Stayed for 3 nights as part of a tour, as stated in other reviews the rooms are rather old and dated. Bar prices are expensive and watch out for the little side bar which is really a place for hooking up with the local ladies. Plenty of choice for breakfast but hot food not very hot. I doubt I would stay there again.
