Hot take: Early Pink Floyd was Primus before Primus.

The older live sets from Floyd consistently blow my mind. And it was upon listening to Interstellar Overdrive Live in Stockholm ‘67 again earlier where I realized what was so intriguing and spectacular, to me, about their improvisation in the earlier years.

One of the things I have always enjoyed and found fascinating about the band Primus is their uncanny ability to consistently create soundscapes in which any note is acceptable at any time. And it sounds good. You can literally play anything along with a Primus song and it will fit. The only other music I’ve come across that creates similar soundscapes is Freeform Jazz.

But as I was listening to IO, I tuned in to the fact that all four of them were playing completely independent music from one another… yet together. And as I continued to listen I realized that they were very adept in their live performances at also creating soundscapes in which any note is acceptable at any time, like Primus. But they were also able to take it one step further than both Jazz and Primus to create soundscapes in which any Sound is also acceptable. You could literally make/play any sound effect as well and it will also fit in just fine. What an incredibly difficult thing to do.

No one else that I have heard comes close to doing that, or doing it so well. Absolutely love their earlier concerts. So fun, so creative, and always original.

If Waters could play bass like Les Claypool, that would be interesting

Any particular Primus album you would recommend checking them out? I've heard of them but never really explored them, but I love early Pink Floyd, so this post intrigues me

Primus sounds nothing like Pink Floyd so be prepared for that. Lol. But if you’re interested I’d say start with their album Sailing the Seas of Cheese. It’s probably the most accessible.

But to test the waters I’d say try a couple of songs first. Tommy the Cat, Jerry Was a Race Car Driver, My Name Is Mud, or Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver are some of their most accessible individual songs to start with.

Primus most 'floyd' albums would probably be frizzle fry and pork soda. Tales from the Punchbowl is great as well.

There's the covers album Miscellaneus Debris that has a Floyd cover on it.

Look up Les Claypool / Pink Floyd, he has quite a few good covers

Primus is terrible.

You meant to say: Primus sucks!

🤣 I purposely avoided saying that.

I got their first album back in the day. I was very disappointed. Never understood how some people get so into them.

Nice.

The original Pink Floyd, like many musicians who became the first rock artists appreciated jazz and blues which are all about improvisation. The name Pink Floyd is actually named for two blues artists, (Pink Anderson and Floyd Council).

A lot of bands and DJs really on improvisations while live, which we obviously wouldn't hear too much if we mainly consume music through streaming.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are heavily influenced by jazz as well and incorporate a lot of improvisation during their live shows, but you wouldn't imagine that if you've just heard their studio recordings.

Lately I've been listening to IO from Leeds 28-Feb-1970. I get a kick out of how Roger introduces it, as the final of the night:

Well, we only have about 7 or 8 minutes remaining... So it looks like we'll have to do the fastest version ever of Interstellar Overdrive.

i don’t know what Primus is but PATGOD and ASFOS, also Ummagumma are the only pink floyd albums i like. I used to listen to PATGOD from start to finish every day for a certain, few years every day in my early 20s

I just listened to UmmaGumma again earlier today! It’s a brilliant and wildly avant garde album. It gets better every time I listen to it. I know a lot of PF fans don’t get into it beyond the live tracks.

for sure though i have to be in a certain mood to listen to them and they usually send me on a bad trip. really scary vibes.

I think the word you’re looking for is dissonant lol. Free form dissonance.

That can’t be, because early Pink Floyd isn’t a honking pile of shit.

Primus -- Music to please your brain tumor.
